Help...(on the writing section)

Test one, section 7 of the CB Blue Book:

(Quick to) (take advantage) of Melanie Johnson’s (preoccupation in) the history of the Johnson family, the genealogist proposed investigating (that) history - for a large fee. (No error)

Error occurs in (preoccupation in). Would it be preoccupation “of”?

(Contrasting with) (most other) fifeenth-century rulers, Portuguese kings (could count on) the support of the aristocracy (in any) overseas ventures. (No error)

Error occurs in (Contrasting with). How would I correct this?

I think its "preoccupation with"

"In contrast with"

(Both just guesses - I don't have any explanations book)

So it's never "Contrasting with"?

yeah i think it would have to be "in contrast with" because think about it... you would never say "comparing with".... you'd say "compared to" or "in comparison with"

just what I think

Both "contrasting with" and "contrasting to" are the correct forms:

Spot them both in

Words endING with the "ing" are often raisING red flags on SAT.

tanman is right: if you can't logically find an error, go with your gut feeling (if you are experiencING it when tryING answerING a question, that is).

There is a grammatical explanation though to why
"Contrasting with" is an error here.
