(Quick to) (take advantage) of Melanie Johnson’s (preoccupation in) the history of the Johnson family, the genealogist proposed investigating (that) history - for a large fee. (No error)

Error occurs in (preoccupation in). Would it be preoccupation “of”?

(Contrasting with) (most other) fifeenth-century rulers, Portuguese kings (could count on) the support of the aristocracy (in any) overseas ventures. (No error)

Error occurs in (Contrasting with). How would I correct this?

yeah i think it would have to be "in contrast with" because think about it... you would never say "comparing with".... you'd say "compared to" or "in comparison with"

Words endING with the "ing" are often raisING red flags on SAT.

tanman is right: if you can't logically find an error, go with your gut feeling (if you are experiencING it when tryING answerING a question, that is).

There is a grammatical explanation though to why
"Contrasting with" is an error here.
