Help On Uc Application!

in the app, under the academic history tab, it asks for:

"Specialized Curriculum/Year-Round Information
If you participated in specialized curricular programs in high school, check as many boxes as apply. You may provide details about your involvement in your personal statement, if desired."

under it, it has the options of:

magnet, academy, year-round, home school, independent study, and other.

i don't quite understand what "Specialized Curriculum" is or what a "magnet" is.

can someone please clarify this section?

thanks.

Magnet would be if you attended a magnet high school. Typically they are specialized in an area of study, so for instance, there is a performing arts magnet high school and students from all over geographically travel to attend that school. It sounds like this doesn't apply to you. They list this so students who home schooled or did independent study or who did not follow a traditional high school path have a place to indicate that on the app.

i have a few more questions.

do sat prep courses and tutoring from sylvan count as "Educational Preparation Programs"?

also, do i list journalism under the extracuricular activites section?

thanks.

any help please?

SAT prep does not count and I doubt getting tutoring is an educational preparation program.

If journalism is a class, then it's not an extracurricular, but if you write for the school paper or something you could always put that.

what if journalism is a class but it releases the school paper as well?

also, "The University is interested in whether you have participated in programs that help students prepare for college by providing information, counseling, tutoring and other services." is what it says for the prep programs. not really sure what they mean by that.

I suppose the school paper would be an activity. I dont know much your tutoring program but I believe they expect something more rigorous than basic tutoring.
