Hello! I am trying to make a decision as to where I should go next year. My choices are:

Indiana University- Bloomington
University of Delaware
UMass- Amherst
Penn State- University Park

I have been admitted to all four schools as an education major, and have visited all of them, but still am having a lot of trouble making a decision! I am from New York so all of the schools are out of state for me. I have to make my decision by May 1st, which is approaching fast so I would love your input!

Why aren’t you considering schools in-state? In which of those states do you ultimately want to live? Schools target their curricula to fulfill state education requirements and that is where your student teaching would take place.

What are the costs of each? All things being equal I think it comes down to Penn State and Indiana. If you are thinking about going to grad school in Education - the “Big 10” universities have an inordinate number of top 25 Education departments (Penn St and Indiana are 22 and 19 respectively). I would consider fit and choose between IU and Penn St. if money is not an issue. If it is then what do you have to pay for each of your 4 choices?

Thank you for all of your help!
The one in state school I got into does not offer education as an undergrad major so it did not make sense for me to consider it even though the tuition is low. Money does play a role, but I do not want to let it make my decision. UMass gave me a partial scholarship, but just as you said it is not a “big 10” school, and its education department is not nearly as highly ranked as Indiana and Penn State. Unfortunately I have no idea where I want to end up living after college as I can’t even decide where I want to go to school!

Well some schools do not have education undergrad majors but have education grad departments that teach education courses and allow you to be an education minor - many grad school in education realize this so you do not HAVE to be an education major. I would be curious as to what your in-state offer is. Also how much would you have to spend at IU or Penn St and is money an issue? It is okay if you have no idea where you want to live after college - if you stay with ed you can choose your Masters or Teaching credential program based on where you want to live OR if you go into an Education Ph.D. program then its about getting funding in a high quality program but those are later concerns.

SUNY Albany was my in state offer. With the money I received from UMass the tuition came out to be about the same, and I figured UMass would be a better place for me. Indiana will cost about 34,000 per year, and Penn State will be closer to 40,000 per year. UMass will be about 22,000 after I factor in the money they gave me. I will be borrowing money for school as my parents can’t pay for it all, but will help as much as they can. I was also considering Delaware because its academics are ranked highest of the four schools.

Delaware’s is the weakest of these school academically.
