Hi guys, I have a few worries.

1) I emailed a letter of interest to my college representative a couple days ago and he replied with this:

"_______,
Thank you for this email, please be assured that I will add it to your application materials and will also note your strong interest in the University of Michigan. The University of Michigan received over 22,000 early action applications this year, so unfortunately we were not able to offer admission to all qualified applicantsonly those that were the most competitive. As a deferred student we ask that you submit your 1st semester senior year grades when they become available, and we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is very competitive and in the past several years due to the high volume of applicants & the strong yield rate among our admitted students, we have not had a great deal of space to offer admission to the deferred pool of applicants. I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also to also explore the other opportunities available to them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns."

Do you guys think this is a good, bad, or generic email?? The part that worries me is when he said "we have not had a great deal of space to offer admission to the deferred pool of applicants"

2) I had the "good" deferral letter, which didn't ask me to send my 7th semester grades, but now this email is telling me to. I'm just worried to send them in because I'm going to have a B+ in AP Calc AB for the semester. All of my other grades are A's though. Do you think I should send them in?

Please comment and thank you!!

Its totally generic. Large universities are not going to have the resources to address individual requests. Of course you should send grades, they are asking for them so it is required.

As for not having a great deal of space you should do some research and ask around as to historic percentages of deferred applicants being accepted. For example at UVA they accepted about 21% of their deferred pool last year - at least knowing that gives a frame of reference for chances (i.e. 2 in 10 chance at UVA. I don’t know what UMich’s number is. Maybe its much higher and either way maybe you are one of the 'top" deferred candidates.

I wouldn’t read into this being a “bad” letter.

I agree, it’s generic. They likely get so many applicant updates that they just cut + paste a reply to get the task off their desk. Nice reply email back to you, but there’s nothing in it to make me think it’s not a standard reply.

Thank you Bigdoglover and ivyparent43. Can anyone give me some input on my B+? How badly do you think it worsens my chances?

Truthfully, I don’t know why you’re worrying about a B+ when the rest of your grades are A’s, especially since its in an AP Calc AB class. If you’re worried about that, than I should be looking for a denial letter with a C in Calculus, but yet my counselor remains positive and thinks I still have an above average shot. I would strongly recommend you send i those grades, they appear to be stellar. If you do not get accepted I would be completely surprised.

B+ shouldn’t be a concern this past term if the rest of the grades are A’s.

First of all, I don’t think you should be worrying too much about this letter because it was apparently generic. What I was concerned is where you found the email address to send a letter of interest?
