Egypt is Africa, not middle east. ;)

Yeah, bikes are definitely helpful. I didn't use one. Really Stanford is campus is nice; it is just that I didn't like moving that much.

When I visited Stanford, the tour person said bikes are pretty much required for Stanford (unless you like heading off to class extra early), and most of the students I saw were on bikes...

Anyway, this discussion is amusing--I was torn between Harvard EA and Stanford EA too, because I'd be happy going to either. I've decided to do Harvard though, since I've slimmer chances there (and some other twisted logic). Doing Harvard EA just seems like it optimizes the chances of getting into both schools... shrug Maybe that'd be the best thing to do if you're not sure which school you prefer.

Good luck wherever you decide :)

Yeah, that's basically what I've come to the conclusion of (with some more twisted logic as well). Looks like Harvard EA for me.

Actually, there's one more piece of info. There is another kid from my school that is also EAing to Harvard. I don't see how he wont' get it. He has almost the same science awards as me, 2400 SAT, (no RSI though), and is a MUCH better writer/english person than me. Do you think I should still apply? I don't know if they will accept 2 ppl from the same school especially considering no one has made it from my school in 4 years.....

Maybe you would like to EA Stanford just in case (since ur already in MIT)

I envy you guys.

By all means, I am not a stupid person, but for me (an international student), MIT is a dream school. An average int'l student's chance is very slim.

Should I EA to a school because it's my first choice or because I think I can get in easier? I think I would rather go to Harvard than Stanford, but if I RD to stanford and EA to harvard, I may get rejected from both, but if I just EA to stanford, then I (hope) can maybe get in.

As I remember, you've got good scores and such too. I guess it just boils down to how much pull RSI has (versus 133+ writing skillz), then.

Hm, if I were in your position, my reasoning would be this:
1) Assuming Harvard doesn't like accepting two people from the same school (and this might be a horribly misguided notion), you'll eventually have to "compete" against this other kid. If he gets in EA, wouldn't that mean your chances are automatically reduced if you go RD? Like... you wouldn't even get a chance to be measured one-on-one with this guy.
2) Do you really think you'll get outright rejected from Stanford RD? I mean, I know all these high caliber schools sometimes make seemingly nonsensical admissions decisions, but... your stats are impressive. I think you have a decent (better than average) chance.

sigh My reasoning may be waaay off though. I don't know...

[edit:] Found this, btw: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=95841.

sighh...people like zogoto make me feel terribly inferior...

it really doesn't matter where you EA; you'll likely get into one or both regardless...I don't see any need to overanalyze...

zogoto - my family lives within 10 minutes of Stanford, my dad taught there and I know it well. You say you might want to do engineering. If that is the case, definitely Stanford over Harvard. If you prefer theoretical math, Harvard over Stanford. Also, if you want to work in technology (as opposed to research science) Stanford over Harvard for sure. The other issue is as everyone has pointed out, location. Do you like urban environments? Cars? People on sidewalks, stoplights, clubs? Or do you like suburban? Lawns, open space, social life mostly on campus? And sports. Basketball teams that go to the NCAAs or just play Ivy League. Also, everyone does bike at Stanford.

Don't just default to Harvard unless you really like it better, it's a different place from Stanford altogether.

As far as majors go, it will probably be a pure science, math, or (maybe) engineering. Definitely research science though. And as far as research output goes, Harvard is definitely #1. I just can't choose though....
