Hello this is Katie. I had moved to NYC with my family at 2014. We came here on a B1/B2 visa and submitted our political asylum case in 2015 which is still pending. I already received a Social Security card & a work permit till now. I had filed my New York State Tax at year 2016.
I will be graduate form NYC high school this July 2017 and going to college at Fall 2017. I did good on my academic and I got admission from SUNYs and CUNYs. I think I will choose to go to Stony Brook.
Could I be eligible for SUNY in-state tuition with a pending asylum case?
Yes, you will be eligible for in-state tuition because you have graduated from high school in NYS, having attended 3 years and your family has resided in NYC
However, you are not eligible for financial aid. You will not be eligible for any of the HESC based initiatives; Excelsior Scholarship, STEM Scholarship, TAP or Federal aid, because you are not eligible to file a FAFSA.
You do not know when or if you will obtain asylum (it could easily be years)
Will you/your family be able to pay for Stony Brook out of pocket?
My Mom said she could able to provid me for around $25,000 per year. But I don’t want to put too much burdens on her shoulder. If I can’t get financial aid, could I able to get student loans? Where I can claim for students loans and what type of loans?
I had high school in NYC for 10th grade. Then for some reasons I went to Michigan for 11th grade. But moved back to NYC at 12th grade. I only had 2 years in NYS. Will this be fine for in state tuition?
I have the same issue. I’m in NYS and on asylum pending status already 2 years. I want to apply to SUNY Downstate Medical school. I have an SSN and EAD form, and filed 2016 NY Tax form. The problem is, I can’t afford the expensive medical education, so I just want to know If there is any changes to get in-state tuition or maybe any other fin aid for Medical education? Can find nothing on SUNY’s website. Please advise me. Thank you in advance.
