....ehehe..stupid questions i know but I just want to be sure..

To the best of my understanding, a magnet school is one that attracts interested students from a large surrounding area, and is generally more competitive than a non-magnet.

I know that in the southern CA area, magnets are specialized into fields such as medical magnet, performing arts magent, math and science, highly gifted etc... magnet programs usually have more advanced classes and are more academically challenging than regular schools

In Maryland, we have two types of magnet schools in our high schools.

First, we have county wide magnet schools, which are your "traditional" magnet programs. These are special schools or programs that are very competive to get into and lead to specialized programs. Such programs can be in the arts, sciences or IB programs.
They usually get a differerent degree from what is normally offered in Maryland, and they send a special profile to the colleges. These kids take mostly honors and AP quality courses and usually have a senior capstone project. However, there are too few slots usually open in these programs considering the amount of top students available in our country. This leads to the other programs that are becoming available.

In the second type of magnet program, we have individual schools offering "in house" magnet programs. The schools that offer these usually have a lot of very motivated, smart, kids. These programs also have special programs in the arts or math/science, or can even offer an IB program. Some of these in house programs also offer a different degree that what is normally offered by Maryland high schools, and these high schools send out a special profile to colleges. These programs also usually have a senior capstone project. As you can tell, there isn't much difference in either of the above noted programs.

Either magnet type of program offer a lot of intensive courses that are usually honors or AP oriented and require very motivated students.

I should note that there is a third program offered by some high schools that offer a "concentration" in some areas such as law, journalism etc. They might have some specialized courses. However, I don't consider these 'magnet programs 'because they usually don't require the same level of intensity as that of other magnet programs ( mostly honors or AP required courses) ,usually don't offer a different degree, usually don't have a senior capstone project etc.

Hope this helps.

ok..so I'm in IB..does that mean I'm in a magnet school?

Your best bet would be to get a copy of your school's profile because it would say what type of school you attend.

or

You can look up your school on the internet at your local board of education

Why don't you just ask your principal or counselor if your school is a magnet or other "special" school?

Fermented, if you are in an IB program, I would bet that it is considered a "magnet program." As noted above, you should check your school profile that gets sent out to all colleges.
