My g.p.a is a 3.5(unweighted) and i got between a 32-36 out of 36 on my ACT with writing. I took the best classes that my school offered for freshies and sophmores, and I took 3 AP classes this year, and will take 3 more for my senior year. I probably won't take any AP test for the 3 APs i took this year. I'll take the tests next year. I will also participate in newspaper, DECA, yearbook, couple other clubs and sports and have a job my senior year. I'll take my SAT Subject test in October also.

I'm gonna try to write a good essay. I am East Indian and I sort of have a sob story, would these two seperate factors improve my chance if i included that in my essay?
Also, Am i less likely to get into UCLA because i live in Colorado?
Does being a girl improve my chances?

I know my high school career is way lame compared to all of the people on this board, but UCLA is seriously my dream school and I'm trying not to give up hope.

Anways, thanks for your help. :)

You have barely no chance. You are OOS and you're GPA is low. ACT would make up for it if you were instate, but the average gpa instate applying is around a 3.8 UW

Lol... sorry... but being a girl does not improve chances....

It is true though that b/c you're OOS, it's harder to be admitted.

BTW, UCLA admissions only looks at grades from junior and senior years... if you look around you should be able to find out how to calculate your UC GPA to give a better idea of where you stand.

UCLA calculates 10th and 11th grade gpa together, so my junior year i have a 4.5 but my sophmore year i was really depressed and i did really bad and had a 3.1. What if i take some of those classes again, to raise my g.p.a to say a 3.8 unweighted? Now do i have even a marginal chance?

I know UCLA has a mandate to pick the best and brightest from California first, but does anyone have a percentage on how many students they take from out of state? And this is unrelated but would i have a chance at USC?

don't' bother with U$C

You always still have a chance, now that holistic admissions has made it a bit easier to take into account excruciating factors. It definitely hurts that you're OOS, but with a great SAT score and extraordinary essays, you have a slight chance.

Try out at USC too; for OOS, USC and UCLA are about equivalent in price. And besides, USC does end up being a bit cheaper due to their higher amount of scholarships.

I'd like to add another factor to my qualifications. I grew up in the Valley and Four of my Valley cousins went to UCLA. hope that helps haha.

And another thing: Why does everyone hate USC so much??! And i don't understand this rich kid thing. So anyone whos rich can go to USC, even if they're horrible students and don't deserve it? Why is it regarded as such a good school then?

And the holistic review is a good thing. Otherwise everyone would just be a genius robot, and dummies like me wouldn't have a chance!

make sure to include your depression in your application, because it WAS a significant factor, and they provide you with a chance to explain any low grades.
don't feel like it's something that shouldn't matter. INCLUDE IT. don't use it as an excuse, or anything, but don't leave it out.
the holistic app should help you in that regard.

sophiar:

UCLA: Reach (out of state)

ok, guys, why are y'all so hard on the lady???

im out of state, my UW GPA is definitely less than 3.5

my sat is 2100 with 12 on the essay

although i DID take 8-9 APs and all, overall my stats and sophiar's are about the same.

my advice, sophiar, is that...DON't DEPAIR...if I can get in, so can you.

i'd say chances are slim. I had a 2270 SAT/4.4 gpa and I didn't get in (in-state)

Hollistic Admissions will help you, don't leave anything out ;) Explain away in your essays.

Are you serious??..I thought a 2200+ SAT in combo with high GPA pretty much guaranteed you a spot at all UCs…Where do you think you lacked in their standards?

This thread is from 2007. OP had a 3.5 GPA, which isn’t high enough for admission. Doppelganger probably didn’t get in because of low AP scores and he applied as an engineering major.

i think he is referring to comment #11

Comment #11 was posted by Doppelganger. He applied as an engineering major and had low AP scores.

Doppelganger had a 4.4 weighted GPA. That could be around a 3.7 to 3.8 unweighted, which is a bit low for a school like UCLA that puts so much weight upon grades.
