Help please cal state honors

Ok i want to become a nurse, and you dont really have to go to that prestigious of a college to become an RN, so i am interested in a cal state. today i got a letter from one about the honors program.

i have a 2150 sat and a 760 and 800 on the SATII lit and US history exam.
i will probably graduate with a UC gpa of 4.17, but at least a 4.0.
on the 4 ap tests i took i got 5's.
i am VP of one club and was secretary of another.
i had a job for like a month.
i did JV crosscountry and track for 2 years.

other than that, i dont have much going for me, but i noticed my grades and stuff are a lot higher than the average applicant, and i was wondering if anyone thinks i can make it into the honors program, because its a full scholarship.

Ide go to a UC if i were you. You WILL get into top UCs with your stats. The price is definitely a little more explensive, but you will get a much better education at UCs than CSUs. If you want to major in anything humanities, berkeley and LA are two of the best choices in the world. Cal is often by brilliant professors considered to have the best humanities programs in the world, and a UC education is markeltable anywhere in any field. Plus, well im not sure, but UCSF probably likes a lot of UC students, and UCSF is arguably the best med school in the world (debated often between harvard and UCSF)

i highly doubt i could get into Cal. maybe ucla if i was really lucky but i really hate the campus and everything else about it. i could probably get into ucsd. but the thing is why should i pay all this money for more expensive school when it wont really matter in my future job? plus UCSD, the UC id like to go to doesn't have a nursing program.

Are you positive you want to be a nurse? Most people change their mind a couple of times before they graduate. I'm certainly headed a different place than I thought I would freshmen year.

Maybe you'll decide to go for MD or PA, the better school leaves way more doors open.

Don't be too quick to brush off your chances at UC Berkeley. Based on their 2006-2007 common data set their SAT ranges are:

Critical Reading: 580-710
Math: 620-740
Writing: 590-710

I'm not sure what your individual SAT components are, but dividing I get an average of 716 (impossible, of course) which would put you at the upper end of those SAT ranges.

Additionally, the average high school GPA of everyone admitted was a 3.9. Again, that puts you slightly above and makes you competitive.

Anyways, others may have advice about nursing. All I'm saying is not to underestimate your chances.

If she wants to go to CSU, let her instead of discouraging it. Sure, she could probably get into a top UC (maybe not Berkeley, though she'd certainly have a great shot). Yes, you WILL get into the honors program at a CSU. If you go to Berkeley or any other UC, you'll be in a class with 750 kids for bio 101 (yes, it happened to my brother). Honors classes would allow you to work more closely with a professor. I'd say go for it, the worst they can do is say no! oh, by the way, have you thought about UW-Seattle? They have the #1 ranked nursing program for like the 10th year in a row or something, and I'm pretty sure you could get in.

thanks for the help
you're right, maybe i shouldn't just decide on nursing because its true, i do tend to change my mind a lot
ok i wont rule out a UC

ad.bc, your question indicates more wisdom than that of most of the responses. It's true that your academic qualifications are high for a CSU student, but going to the school that best suits your career plans (and which is focused on that path and may even provide some scholarship $$$) makes a lot of sense. True, you may change your plans. But an education at a CSU - particularly one of the more selective ones like SDSU, which has a nationally ranked nursing program and respected departments in other disciplines as well, will do just fine for you, even if you change course in the next four years. Berkeley doesn't have a nursing program; UCLA just started one last year; I'm not sure about the other UC's. If you can get into the honors program at a CSU, with a scholarship in the mix, I'd say you were doing great. All you need to do is apply to several options and see what happens. You don't have to decide until next spring. In the meantime, check out the undergraduate nursing (or pre-nursing) programs at the schools you apply to.

CSU Fresno has the Smittcamp Honor Program. Tuition and the dorms are free (you have to pay for meals) plus you get a laptop. My son was accepted into the program with stats similar to yours.

I believe they have a nursing program.

If money is your major concern, you might get Regents at some of the lower UCs.

Good luck!
