Help please! Colgate vs. Wesleyan vs. UVA

Hi, just got accepted to Colgate, Wesleyan, and UVA. I know these are all really different schools, but that almost makes it harder for me to decide, because I’m not completely sure what I’m looking for.

I applied ED to Wash U in St. Louis (but didn’t get in) if that helps give a sense of the kind of school I want.

I’m worried that Wesleyan is a little too liberal and hippy for me, that Colgate is too jocky and rural for me, and that UVA is too fratty and preppy for me.

I am in-state at UVA, so obviously there is a huge difference in finances there, but I’m not seeking financial aid, and I’m lucky enough that my parents are letting me choose despite those differences. That being said, I do think I need to include the in-state tuition in weighing my options.

Not sure what I want to major in, probably a liberal arts degree though (I got into the College of Arts and Sciences at UVA). I’m interested in a cappella, and it seems like UVA has the best a cappella, especially female. (I’m a girl).

I know a lot about each of the schools (location, statistics), I guess I’m just looking for a sense of the students and trying to figure out which is maybe the least extreme – where I could find well-rounded people of all different kinds.

Since you can drive to all three schools, are you planning to attend their admitted students program? I would highly suggest doing so to make your decision easier. I would post your concerns on the Colgate and Wesleyan boards, in a tactful way, to see students’ reactions to your questions. I would be interested in the Colgate question since my daughter has the same concern about Colgate being that she does not have an athletic bone in her body. Good luck and congrats! You did very well with your college acceptances!

If it is possible to visit the schools again for accepted students day that may help you to decide. But in general, if neither of the LACs feel like the right fit, I’d go to the larger, cheaper UVa.

I would try arranging a night in the dorm at each with friends on either a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Attend a couple of classes

There are many non-fratty/preppy students at UVA! Its size gives you a better shot at finding your “peeps” as UVA has plenty of “well-rounded people of all different kinds” and countless student organizations to help you connect. Your interest in acapella gives you an immediate “group”. Think of what you can do with the savings – study/travel abroad, grad school, a car?

Life is short and this isn’t rocket science. I think in your case, you should stick with UVA.

My daughter is currently a junior at Colgate. She is not a jock nor are any of her roommates and friends. She is in a sorority and participates in dance, but has never participated in any sports! The campus is rural, but my daughter loves it there!
