Help please ! Grade affecting college? French honors versus regular?

cbw123, thanks for the update. I would not sweat this… honestly, if my kids had been getting Cs, I would have had them drop back (Bs we can live with, Cs we can’t is our motto…). My kids are just awful at foreign languages, and we all acknowledge that (parents and kids – not an ounce of natural talent in the area). If he is still having trouble in the regular French class this year, a couple of options:

Get him a tutor. We did this, and it definitely helped.
Or

Have him switch languages. One of my kids took a year of Latin, and wished she could switch to it altogether (but our school did not offer it for credit, just 2 years of extra curricular). It was still hard for her, but easier than French. Or switch to Spanish (reputed to be easiest to learn). The downside of switching is that he may have to take more semesters in college to reach proficiency if they have a requirement.

Languages is one area where I think admissions officers are more forgiving. My younger son struggled with Latin and never got better than a B. He got into Tufts, Vassar and U of Chicago based on the rest of his application which was much better, though even there he had quite a few B’s.

Thanks for the update! You asked about Spanish Camp for your daughter. Concordia Language Villages does Spanish, as well (actually, I think they do at least a dozen languages). The camps are amazing. If your daughter is a language-lover, then I really recommend them.
