Help please! Harvard, Princeton, Yale, M&T

Hi all, this is my first post but I'm in a tough (albeit good) dilemma-- I need to choose between harvard, princeton, yale, and penn's m&t program. I'm posting this in both Harvard and Penn's forums cuz I think those are my top two choices now. Anyways I'd really appreciate your honest appraisal. Thanks!!

Harvard, of course, has a brand name that is second to none.

M & T on the other hand--and Penn in general--offers a breadth and depth of curricular and interdisciplinary opportunities that go way beyond the liberal arts or engineering curricula offered at Harvard and the other schools.

And Wharton's name brand is no slouch either if your goal is to enter the business world, and it compares well with HYP on Wall Street and in similar environs.

You really can't go wrong with either choice. It's a matter of personal preference, and where you'd feel most comfortable fitting in.

If possible, get on each campus during student admitted day. Harvard does this. M&T has a special day. Talk to current students in both places....then decide which is the best match for you.

See how happy they are. How they like their choice (chances are, just about everyone in all places probably had to make the exact same kind of decision you are making). See if you fit in one place better than the others. Are kids happy? DO they learn interesting, useful stuff? Can you imagine yourself there?

Don't worry about brand names. All are good. Worry about where you want to be for the next four years, what you want to learn, who you want to be with, what you want to do after college. Get those questioned answered during your school visits.

if you want to work on wall street and at the cutting edge of finance, or get into management/financial consulting, M&T without a shadow of a doubt. Their alumni get placed at the very best firms (even the ones who don't do that well). The education is unique, challenging and more desirable by employers than a HYP degree in anything.

If you are less sure, H would be good.

Depends a lot on what you want to study. The intersection of those degrees (M&T, and Harvard) is pretty small. Harvard's got a very small (but growing!) engineering program, and doesn't teach business to undergraduates. Those are the fields you'd be studying in M&T. This really is an apples and oranges question - and speaking from experience we don't see many admitted M&T student on M&T deciding between Penn and Harvard. (More often, we see Princeton, MIT, and international schools stealing away people)

mattwonder, why you don't see M&T student deciding between Penn and Harvard? Can you clarify? It is because that Kids are accepted into M&T tend to not be accepted into Harvard?

no because kids that apply to M&T (thus, are interested in engineering and business) don't apply to harvard. (because its engineering program is very small and it doesn't teach business the way wharton does)

^ That's correct. There's much more of an overlap with Princeton and MIT due to the majors offered.

harvard! there is really no question after being accepted to harvard-the name recognition alone is enough to carry you through your professional endeavors in life and apply your college education usefully.

IMO it's up to your interests. It's like asking "Should I eat this apple or orange?" Well, we can give you the pros and cons of each, but in the end, it really depends on your interests.

tough choice. IF it was harvard v penn, its easily harvard. With M&T though, it is not clear at all. Harvard has name recognition, but M&T is one of the finest programs in the world. I would say M&T, getting two degrees (engineering + wharton) will set you up just as well as anything at harvard.

harvard or m&t

M&T dude...are u kidding me.
if u interests are business and engy (im assuming) then...WHARTON...top of the line business school...and Upenn is no slip shod school for engineering.

of course ima junior in High school who can only pray for acceptance into M&T early decision. ...im biased. =]

Hi all,

thanks for the input. i've decided to enroll in M&T. When I told people at harvard I was leaning towards penn, you can imagine how many looks i got thinking i was crazy... m&t definitely does not have the name recognition in the broader populace but from what I gather its name recognition on wall street is quite enough.

To rising seniors and those yet to apply for college: my advice: don't stress out over applications.. i certainly didnt.. i had fun doing school and extracurriculars in high school and didn't do things for college but because i enjoyed it. Putting your all into something, not knowing whether you'll succeed or fail, but doing it because you love it, will in the long run pay off!!

Congrats! Great choice! :)

congrats on ur acceptance into M&T...one of the most prestigious prgrams in the world. ;-)
whats "harvard" XD
