HELP! Please, Illegal mom and taxes question

I believe I made a mistake! I have filed already for FASFA in the past, I am in my 2 of college. I was not aware I had to put 000 for my mom SSN information. Due to that I was unable to receive enough money and the grant I know i am eligible for. If I change the SSN now would there be problem? Also for the Tax portion what would I do. My mom does file taxes, i am unsure if it is the right way or not.

I need help, I need to get this figured out. I really dont want to take another loan out. I also don't want this to have consequence for my mom!

I know I should have done more research before I even applied 2 years ago.

If your mom is illegal, then I think you’re supposed to put all zeroes in for her SSN. She doesn’t have a SSN, so you have to put zeroes.

That isn’t what kept you from getting grants. You get grants based on family income/EFC…not based on zeroes or not using zeroes for your mom’s SSN. The fact that your mom pays taxes doesn’t mean that you put in numbers…you’re supposed to put in zeroes.

What was your EFC? What was your family income?

1) What social security number did you put in for your parent–(mom) if she doesn’t have one?

2) Do you have a legal social security number?

Do you understand that you are applying for grant money that if paid for by US citizens and is open to US citizens? You have to sign the FAFSA forms (done electronically) as does your parent. Do not lie – there is a penalty for fraud.

Yes I know about the grant money! That’s why I stated I am aware I should be receiving because I am a citizen! I am entitled to it!

So Takis123…what social secruity numbers did you use? What did you put for your mom if she doesn’t have one? Your inital post makes it sound like you put in inaccurate information in the forms for your mom.
WHat was your family’s EFC?
No one here can help without more information.

H’s social security number used by someone to pay and file for taxes. Now we are in quite a jam. No sympathy here.

floridamomoftwo, I am sorry to here that. Taxes can be filed by illegals with an ITIN, rather than with someone else’s SSN, even though the fake SSN is on the W-2. I am assuming that you had to file by mail and complete an extra form. You should still be able to get the money, at least that is how it has always been for my clients.

I also advise everyone to pay close attention to the annual SS statements that list jobs, wages, etc. If there is an extra job, etc you can take steps to correct that.

It happened to my my elderly parents, also, some nonlegal in NY was using my mom’s social security number. My parents, of course, collect social security and they were notified by the local FBI office. Floridamom, it is one of the easiest things to “clean up” for the owner of the social security number, good luck. It was not a big deal at all for my mom to get her social security file cleaned up.

OP, If your mom does not have a social security number then you can put in all zeros so what do you think you did wrong? If your mom has a social security number I would update your FAFSA to reflect the correct information. I’m not sure I understand what happened with the income and income tax part? Did you fill out the income and tax portion correctly or incorrectly? Again, if your FAFSA is incorrect, you can correct it. Are you Pell eligible (low income)? Is that why you are concerned?
