Help please! In-State Cheaper School vs. Out of State Expensive School?

Stony Brook is full of super talented students. People from the top schools in NY (Stuy, Brooklyn Tech, Hunter College HS) go there because it’s affordable. I personally know some amazing students who go there.

G-town is a very good school, but honestly I don’t think it would be worth it for pre-med…it’s not realllyy known for that anyways. In fact, I would think Stony would seem more like a good pre-med school to me. Save the money!

And 40K loans to NYU is NOT a good option! Go to Stony Brook and definitely be challenged :slight_smile:

Were you admitted to the Honors program?

Unfortunately, premed is not really compatible with being pushed out of your comfort zone any more than necessary. Your undergraduate years will be spent worrying about your grades according to the following scale:

A = acceptable
B = bad
C = catastrophic
D = disastrous
F = forget about medical school

The risk of a grade lower than A will deter you from seeking academic challenges.

@ucbalumnus lol…so true. Actually, getting a D can often mean forget about med school. Getting a couple of C’s can mean that, too, particularly if it’s BCPM class.

The issue is that it’s too hard to dilute the impact to the GPA. A friend of mine’s son has 2 B-'s that are hurting his GPA big time!

Many BCPM classes are 4 credit classes, so a low grade in one or two of them just devastates the GPAs.

I was admitted into the WISE program. And I also thought Gtown wasn’t good for pre-med, but after visiting, they’re putting a much greater focus on it. They recently built a new science building @LushLillies

Georgetown UG does not guarantee admission to their Medical School. It is NOT a top tier medical school. So why spend(debt) a tonne on UG when you have a cheaper option.

Did RPI offer you the BS/MD program?

If it were me, or my kid, and if I could afford it, I would choose Vassar, Brandeis, Colgate, or RPI before I would choose either Stoneybrook or Georgetown. That’s just me. I don’t know enough about you to choose for you, but I would give it another look, seriously! Make a spreadsheet with ALL the schools. Compare costs, loans, rankings, and their success at getting kids into medical school.

Yeah, I agree with the sentiments above that STEM at Georgetown isn’t anything special.

“I have other options, such as Vassar, Colgate, Brandeis (with scholarship) and RPI (with really good scholarship) but I’m not really looking into those since I would like a really urban campus”

Huh? Did Brandeis move?

Nope. I checked. They are still in a suburb of Boston. Closer to Boston than Stony Brook is to NYC. And RPI is closer to Albany than Stony Brook is to NYC.

What are total costs for Brandeis and RPI?

Medical school is expensive. Save your bulkiest loans for that, and go to SB.

Can you clarify…Georgetown costs $70k per year. Do your parents know that? Are they saying that they’ll pay $35k per year? and you’d have to borrow $35k per year and they’ll cosign??

Anyway, if your parents will pay $35k per year, then those other schools aren’t affordable either.

What merit amounts did you get from Brandeis? From RPI?

I got $40k from RPI and 18k from Brandeis. I wasn’t offered anything from the BS/MD program as far as I know. I’ve seen RPI before and I got the vibe it was a school more focused on computer engineering+tech. I also got into the Benton Scholars program at Colgate but I’m not sure if I’ll receive any money from this.

How much does Stony Brook cost?

I’m not sure why it matters if most others are pursuing computer engineering and tech. People don’t tend to say that more people competing to enter med school helps them.

Which school is the BS/MD school?

@mom2collegekids RPI has a BS/MD program. I’m not sure if they invited prior to admissions or it is open to all students who meet certain criteria.

Again, I say, make a spreadsheet and look ALL your schools side-by-side. If the money at RPI is comparable with SB, then I’d strongly consider it. If you can afford Brandeis, that’s a great option. Forget Georgetown. Good luck.

You have a week to decide where to matriculate, right? If I were you I would call Colgate and establish exactly what the Benton package contains and entails. If you are going elsewhere you can ultimately rescind the offer and allow another deserving applicant to take your place.

Good luck with your search!

Thank you guys for the advice! After looking at all financial aid offers, I chose Georgetown. SB was a great option, I just couldn’t love it as much as GU. Thanks again!
