Why Duke? Well, why not???

Duke is like my best friends. It embraces my uniqueness, cares for and responds to my needs, and just as I have found in my best friends the qualities I look for in a companion, Duke is truly the epitome of what I have been seeking for as I have searched and searched for the perfect undergraduate experience.

Born in Bangladesh, I have spent half my life there and half residing in the Sunshine State. I am fully accustomed to the warm weather, and I was discontented to see that most of the top-notch colleges are in the Northeast. Well, that’s where Duke came in as one of the most prestigious, best academic schools in the South, right in the vicinity of my home and family and where I can satisfy my thirst for a unique, extensive undergraduate experience without ending up in the hospital due to hypothermia.

My heart lies in medicine, but I have a passionate interest in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, environmental science and global sustainability, and foreign languages. Thus, Duke appeals to me because of its opportunities for interdisciplinary studies through programs such as Program II and Focus. I am an enthusiastic officer of my school’s Multicultural Club, and I have ardently volunteered my time to fundraise for multicultural issues like the genocide at Darfur. Being from an underprivileged country, I have seen the effects of poverty on health-related issues. Through DukeEngage, the Hart Leadership Program, and DGHI, I wish to assert my leadership skills to address such societal issues and help communities in need. And yet the list doesn’t end: Duke Forest; Sarah P. Duke Gardens; a unique campus culture, including camping out at K-ville before the basketball game; the exemplary Blue Devils tennis team; a spot right in the middle of a city; a beautiful campus; Duke spirit; friendly students and faculty; opportunities for research… What more could I want?
