Hello, so I am going to be a junior in high school and I have never done homeschooling or online school. I have always been at a public and then private school. Anyways, last year in class I always noticed all this time I had been wasting with kids and teachers talking and them having me do work j knew wouldn’t help me. And also, sometimes the work would be busy work. I was in all honors last year (the most challenging courses my school had to offer) and I was always doing my work after school and I noticed how much time I had wasted in school. I am very driven and I’m good at teaching my self things. I don’t procrastinate and I think online schooling could give me more time to run my blog, have more time to do more AP classes, be on a sports team, and do other E.C.'s I otherwise wouldn’t have time to do in the school year. also, my family travels a lot so I would have the ability to travel more throughout the school year. It all sounds great to me except for one thing: Does it look bad to colleges if your are online schooled (ps next year my school only offers 3 AP classes) knowing that you could take more challenging courses and spend more time doing E.C’s and volunteering? If it will hurt my chances and not benefit me (even though I would have more time and get to do more AP’s and do soccer, run my blog, volunteer, and intern and other E.C’s) thank you your help would be much appreciated!
I have been having the same problem as you, I have done my research and the only reason that it would hurt you is that you don’t have clubs and other ECs opportunities that you would have at a public school. But if you are planning to still get involved your fine. Btw what program are you planning on using.
Some of my siblings have alternated between charter school and homeschooling with a lot of that time being spent doing online education. I think it’s worth it if you do the research with your parents and get connected with an alternative school that is connected to the state. My siblings (and many other home schooled people that I know) either finished high school a year early or ended up taking classes at local universities and community colleges.
I highly recommend to be extremely careful in your choosing because the ONLY THING that will make it impossible to go to a uni or state college is if you get your remaining high school education from an unaccredited source. So in other words making sure you are getting your HS diploma from somewhere accredited is the most important thing to focus on.
Now the last thing I have to say is that it will not hurt you to go down the independent education path if you are motivated and get your work done on time. Some of the smartest people I know did independent education and they’ve gone on to great colleges!
To alleviate your fears of EC’s and what not take classes at the local community college or university extension program; it’ll work wonders!
