Hello everybody! I'm a junior in high school and I am in LOVE with NYU! :) It is my top school (also my reach) and I just NEED to go there. Of course if I don't get in, it won't be the end of the world, but right now it's my dream to get in there and go there. I really want this and am willing to work my butt off for it. Freshman year my final GPA was a 3.69, Sophomore year my GPA went down to a 3.44. I know this is not close to what the average GPA of students who apply is, but I know I can raise my GPA during this year. However at the beginning of this year I had many family issues and emotional issues, and right now my grades are definitely not up to par. Our first quarter is ending and most of my grades will be Bs, however I am starting to work harder than I ever have. I know that next quarter I can raise them all to As and A+s and I can do really well for the rest of this year. My extracurriculars are great, I've done Girl Scouts for 10 years, I've done dance 5 years, the school musical the past two years and this year I joined marching band. I have taken choir all my life. I am also apart of three clubs in our school. I have only taken the PSATS and will recieve my scores in December, and next Spring I will take the SATS. I plan on taking two SAT courses because I know I need to get above at least a 2200. I also plan on taking the ACTS, and will hopefully do well on them as well. I will apply regular decision so that my first semester/quarter grades will be sent to them too, and I plan on doing excellent during that time too. I do not take any AP classes however I take 4 Honors courses and two CPA courses. I also am willing to put in a ton of effort on my application and to write a stellar essay. I am thinking of majoring in: english, philosophy, a language, global studies/international studies, or communications. I also intend on studying abroad during my time there. However, is it better when I apply to go in undecided or to use my intended major? Also is NYU looking for people with certain majors? Would it be easier for me to go to my states school and then transfer? I'm sorry this is so long! I just really want to know what you guys out there think I need to really focus on and what I need to do to get in. Please give me all the information you can! Thank you SO much!

Transferring into NYU is harder than getting in as a freshmen. It’s quite well-known that NYU is tougher on transfers than freshmen.

As far as your GPA is concerned, if you’re applying for CAS, it should be at least a cumulative 3.6 and SAT scores of 2000+

NYU does not look for particular majors. You apply to a college, not a particular major (Even though you can apply for say politics, you’re not applying to a program, so to speak, you’re applying to CAS). You can apply undecided, but if you know what you want to study, apply with that on your major. Remember, you can do a double major or a major and a minor of a major and a double minor or even a double major and double minor. So you can a breadth of course subjects.

“I do not take any AP classes however I take 4 Honors courses and two CPA courses” This might hurt you. Most NYU applicants have completed 2 or more AP classes.

I see that you’re interested in philosophy. Just in case you didn’t know, NYU has the best philosophy program anywhere in the english speaking world - and I’m not saying this because I’m a philosophy major at NYU. (Check out Brian Leiter’s rankings for philosophy programs) Most of modern philosophy comes from or it reviewed by or worked on by professors at NYU. When you take a philosophy class at NYU, you’re taking a class from someone who’s written tens of papers, entire books, etc. on the subject that you’re learning.
