Hey guys I was a QuestBridge finalist, however I did not matched. Now I have a choice between applying to either Rice or Northwestern by Early Decision. These are my two dream schools and I like them equally as much. I see that their rankings and acceptance rates are fairly similar on various websites. Which school do you guys think give me a greater chance of getting accepted? Thanks a lot!
P.S I am currently ranked 1 out of 650 kids in my high school with a GPA of 3.96 but my ACT score is fairly low at 31.

You people are the worse. A 31 isn’t low on anybody’s scale.

If your EC’s, volunteering, essays, and recommendations are good you should be fine, but then again admissions is a tricking and sometimes deceiving process so who knows. Don’t fully rely on those schools though, apply to others.

Yeah, I applied to two safety schools. Also when I said that my act score was fairly low I was referring to the stats posted on those schools’ websites. They state that their range is 31-34 so I assumed that my score was on the lower side. I’m not trying to be conceited or anything haha. Thanks for your response man!

First my advice – Apply to whichever one is your first choice.

However, here’s what we know:

Northwestern appears to give a lot of consideration to ED. Over the past few years, they have been increasing the class percentage accepted through ED (last year they took about 40% of their class this way). However, in response to this more and more are applying to ED (there’s a thread about this on the Northwestern site).

Other than that that it’s a truly excellent school, I know nothing at all about Rice’s ED policies. They may be the same as NU’s or may be different.

Oh ok. Well good luck. Hopefully things work out in your favor. I’ve spent 3-4 summers at Northwestern. I love it, it’s a very beautiful school.

OP: Why are Northwestern & Rice your "dream schools " ? What do you plan to study ? Answer these two questions & you should receive some solid guidance.

P.S. Due to your spectacular class rank & outstanding GPA, you should be a strong candidate for both schools despite being at the 25th percentile for standardized test scores.

I’m kind of surprised that a QuestBridge finalist is applying ED anywhere. If money is tight, you might be better off applying only RD so that you can compare various colleges’ offers of financial aid. Even if NU or Rice were to “meet” your need, there’s no guarantee that another university you like pretty well wouldn’t meet it better. If you can’t comparison shop, you’ll never know.
