Hi guys,
I’m a junior in high school and I want to eventually either go to medical or business school.
So I would like your opinions on what is the “best” undergraduate degree which can give me a choice to go to medical or business school for my graduate.
If you guys can suggest an engineering degree that can also prepare me for medical and business school, i would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
Engineering degrees prepare you for a job as an engineer. You can work around that (I think mom2collegekids’s son was a ChemE major before going to med school?) but it’s not the primary focus of the degree. So it might not be the engineering part that prepares you for other jobs, but rather what else you add to it.
You can major in anything and go to medical or business school.
Think beyond. Med school and business school are not goals in and of themselves; they are means to an end. Obviously if you go to med school you want to be a physician, but what would you want to do if you got a business degree? Why do you want one? What kind of work are you interested in? That might help you decide.
There is no “best” undergraduate degree that can give you that choice. You could major in philosophy, complete all the pre-med requirements, and apply to MBA and MD programs senior year - it doesn’t matter. MBA programs generally require or strongly recommend 2-5+ years of work experience after college anyway.
One engineering degree that’s good for business is industrial engineering. But lots of businesses hire lots of different kinds of engineer. “Business” is such a catch-all term these days - there are construction businesses that use civil engineers, chemical plants that hire chemical engineers, aerospace companies that hire aerospace engineers, tech companies that hire electrical engineers…those are all businesses.
