great letters of rec.

I know my GPA and scores aren't great. But my high school is very competitive and is a blue ribbon school. I received a letter from penn state saying to try to apply to a different campus. Penn state University Park is my number 1 choice and I am currently trying to do everything possible. My brother goes to penn state and a few of his friends did not get in. They wrote letters and appealed them and finally got in. I am asking a PSU alumni to write a letter of rec. and my brother is going to write one too. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?
I would really appreciate it!

Alright, first off, PSU does not look at letters of recommendation, so there not even worth sending.

Its probably going to be a reach for you to get into Penn State University Park, especially for Fall semester, if you applied for Summer, there is a much better chance of being admitted. The ACT score is within Penn State's range, but the GPA is rather low. The only way that GPA wont kill you only if you've had a very challenging course load. Best of luck.

I didn't get into UP. I already received my letter. I'm writing personal letters to the admissions office. Thats what my brother's friend did. I applied for summer session and didn't get in. I know its because of my GPA. I've been calling too. I was just wondering if anyone else had ideas as to what else I should do...

Fuze, what were your grades and sats?

Mostly B+ and B all throughout high school
I've had a C+ in an AP class. Thats about it.
writing-620
math-610
cr-500
My SATs weren't as good as my ACTs so I didn't bother sending them in

whats your weighted gpa

my fautl haha

I have no idea what my weighted GPA is.
composite- 26
math-30
english-24
reading-23
science 25
and i got an 8 on the writing

How many AP/ honor classes did you take?

only one...
My neighbor is a PSU alumni so I have an interview with him on Sunday, so hopefully that'll help.

What do you think of my chances with a 3.4 unweighted, 10 AP's and 9 honors and a 25 on the ACT (~1180 SAT)

your 10 APs help a lot..when will you get your letter?

No idea, I sent in my application and stuff in September but didnt send my ACT scores until November 15th, so I should be hearing soon.

Also, I applied for Fall and then Summer so well see.

Here is the thing about appealign your acceptance, from my experience with people that have done that. .
you HAVE to have a legit reason. you can not just say "oh it's casue this is my first choice". I know someone that did it over and over numerous times and it did not work. This kid had a 3.4 and a 1290 and was clearly qualified but he had no REASON to appeal because he was out of their range. However I also know 2 twins. One got in, one did not. That is a legit reason to appeal. It's really hard to appeal just because, because if not like you got "rejected" . . . just sent to another campus.

Also, how significant is this psu alum. Penn state has TONS of alumni, i know because my whole family is alums and I still have a iffy chance of getting in. If this guy donates big $$ or has connections, I think it would definitly help you. You should consider calling and asking to do a personal interview. Write an essay about what you would add to the penn state community, or explain how you will succed at their school.

Baby, when you said you had a friend with a 3.4 and a 1290 did he have a rigorous courseload? I have a 3.4 but I have taken 10 ap classes.

he recruits grads from PSU for his company. He is also friends with the head of the Schreyer honors college..and knows professors. He is still really active there. I have an interview with him this weekend...so I'm hoping this will help out. One of my brothers friends though appealed twice and finally got in. she didn't have a legit reason though..i guess it just depends

yea my borther does that too. he is real big in shryers and he was a lion ambassador. just call and make sure they read them. just keep appealing then, at this point you have nothing to loose :-)

okay thanks so much!! i really appreciate it

fuze im quiet surprised you didnt get in for summer.
