So far my son has been admitted to the following schools:
USC (Presidential Scholarship Finalist)
UCI
UCSB
UTA
Cal Poly SLO
Purdue
We are waiting on UCSD, UCLA, UCR, UCSC, Cornell, Carnegie and Harvard (4.45 gpa, 35 ACT Hispanic )
Based on the current list of acceptances, how would you rank the choices?
UTA---- UT Arlington? Are you in Texas?
University of Texas Austin.
We are in California
No financial limits? you would take UT at full pay? Purdue?
Did he get deferred ED anywhere?
Drop UT, Cal Poly, Purdue.
I’d go with USC so long as the net cost after scholarships/financial aid is not much more than UCI & UCSB. Among UCI and UCSB, it’s a toss up based on your son’s personal preferences.
If your kid gets into Harvard and the financial aid is reasonable, go. Just my opinion but I’d being willing to pay a bit more (within reason). Harvard has many research initiatives and programs that are joint with MIT and the Harvard Medical School related to biomedical engineering. The city of Boston is spectacular with opportunities in biomedical engineering.
Cornell & Carnegie are great, but ONLY if the financial aid is significant so that the net costs are comparable to the UCs.
As for the others that you haven’t yet heard from… drop UCR and UCSC. Your current options are better.
UCSD engineering, especially biomedical, is fantastic, so I strongly suggest them over UCI, UCSB.
Thank you all very much! Cost is an option but I’m willing to work extra to make cost not be a determining factor. I just want the best for my boy who has worked so hard to position himself as well as possible.
