HELP!! REJECTED FROM MANY SCHOOLS!

Right now my parents really want me to go to UCI, so I most likely going to commit to UCI, unless I miraculously get into the colleges that I am waiting for. UCI has a nice Econ program, so I think that it will not be too bad. If I do not like UCI, then I will transfer.

@myos1634 I will not call colleges, since I do not want to risk getting in trouble. I remember that one of my friends told me that she called a college to ask them about why they rejected her and they told her that they can not release specific information about that.

Find actual scholarships  - not just one but several. Start looking NOW.

ccheennaa is right: some scholarships require you to have everything in a packet, not sent separately. That is, you’re in charge of gathering your SSR, teacher recommendations, documents, etc, each in its own separate, sealed&signed envelop, and put them all in a larger envelop for the scholarship committee.
Realize though that you’ll have to do it “for real”. And do it for a couple scholarships. (You can tell your GC you need so many because none of your 100% need met colleges that are ideal for lower-income students admitted you so now you need to find ways to fund the gap.) Why not send 3 out of the 4 you requested, for instance  after all, it wouldn’t be bad if you won something…

@MYOS1634‌ thanks again for the clarification. I’m happy you saved the OP from my bad advising

@myos1634 I am definitely going to apply for scholarships for real! I have a folder with many scholarship applications, so I will find a few that I qualify for. I will find one or two that I will apply for, so I could open up the rec and stuff from my GC. I already found a few, so I am going to start working on them now!

@coffeelife‌ remember, you need to find scholarships you will apply to in addition to one that you will not. As soon as you open the rec, it will gave gone to waste. At least in my school the rec writer uses a special envelope or signs it across the seal, or uses a stamp. So just to be sure get one pretend scholarship.

So either like apply to two and get three GC recs, or apply to one that maybe needs teacher recs/gives you the option between teacher and guidance counselor, get two from teachers then get the third you don’t need from your guidance counselor.

Also remember girl, take a break of is site. Everything will work out. Please don’t waste break stressing out too much.

Okay, so you get a copy of the letter, you read it, it turns out she told everyone you were the devil incarnate . . . and then what? You and your parents go to the principal with the letter, and he or she asks, “And how did you get a copy of this?” And you say . . . . ???

Stop trying to do an end run around the rules. Talk to your parents, and decide together how you want to proceed. You may decide, after getting the rest of your decisions, that you prefer to do nothing. At which point the only thing left would be for your parents to tell the school that they insist your sibling be assigned a counselor other than this one!

@ccheennaa I will apply to a bunch for real and I will have 1 or 2 pretend ones. Everything is starting to sort out and I have UCI, which is a nice school. I am going to visit it in a few days, so hopefully I will get my mind off of everything

@dodgersmom My sibling has a different GC, so I dont need to worry about him switching GCs. I just want to know if she was the reason for my rejections and if she is, I do not think I will go to the principal. I still have all of spring break to think about it and wait for decisions, so I am not 100% sure if I will go through will the pretend scholarship.

I think that for peace of mind, when a strong student is rejected from many many places,it’s important to assuage doubt and know for sure whether there was a problem in the application, and where.
You don’t have to do anything with the information, but at least you know.

I do not plan on doing anything with the info, but I would love to have some peace of mind because these last few weeks have left me with many questions and they have left me EXTREMELY stressed.

The other issue is the sibling. So far have not done amazing on acceptances and it is actually making my younger sibling upset because their grades are not quite as good and they feel the situation is hopeless. I got into one place I would consider but am not excited about and got WL at places that were high targets-low reaches-mid reaches. So I figure if they were willing to consider me for a WL then there is probably nothing wrong with my application other than I have not cured the common cold yet

Strong suggestion, schools in the UK and Ireland accept rolling all the way through usually. Trinity College in Dublin (highly prestigious and beautiful) accepts through may 1 and will issue decision in June, same time UCD issues waitlist decisions.

Is there an Ivy equivalent that still accepts? How expensive would it be?

OP is lower-income and probably can’t afford to be full pay in Ireland or the UK, unfortunately.

I will look into those schools, but honestly my parents would probably not let me. I applied to American University of Dubai and I am looking at a few international schools, just in case anything happens this semester ( I have had SO much bad luck with everything this year). Again, my parents probably won’t let me off. I am pretty sure my parents can pay up to 40K a year, but schools that are 45-60K a year are too much. I know my parents would pay full price for like Stanford or a really high ranking school, but I am not willing to go to schools like Lewis and Clark, etc for the full 50Kish price.

Do we know that the essays were good and that the GC letter must be what sunk the OP? There are some pretty horrible essays posted on CC, and some of the posters claim that they have been proofread by experts, like the one approved by “mom’s friend who works in admissions.” The essay that had been approved by the mom’s friend was riddled with bad punctuation and sentence structure.

Well I personally do not want to put up my essays because they have a lot of specific personal details and I do not want anyone to plagiarize them, but I honestly had a lot of people read my essays. I had about 5 friends and 2 teachers ( one of them is a teacher that is one of the harshest essay graders at my school) read my essays and they liked them. I worked for days on my essays and I do not think that my essays are bad. I was also the top English student in 9-11th grade, so I do not think that I am an awful writer.

The thing is that I got accepted to UCI, UCSC and UCR and WLed at UCD and UCSB with my essays and if my essays were that awful, then I do not think that they would take me/WL me. I used one of my essays that I wrote in my UC application as my common application essay, but I have been hit with a string of rejections from private colleges (many of them were A LOT easier to get into than the UCs) and private colleges are the ones that look at the letter of rec, so I think that it might be my GC. I mean my GC said “coffeelife, since you asked a few days late, I do not guarantee that your letter will be good or edited”. She has treated me bad all year, even though I was respectful towards her, so she could have easily done that.

I dont know anything for certain, so I can not blame anyone, but I am going to look into it. I want to try to see the letter of rec to get some peace of mind and see if my GC is to blame.

I don’t know what is going on here. OP is not sunk, he was accepted to UCI, and has a bright future ahead of him.

@rgosula I know that I have a good future ahead of me with UCI, but I am just shocked at the string of rejections at private schools and I interested in finding out if my counselor is to blame for these rejections. I should not have been rejected from Purdue or a few other private schools and it is just confusing me…

Have to agree. The Top Tier ones maybe, but each of BU, NE and Brandeis, I doubt it.
