Yay for Muhlenberg, congrats! They should come through with some merit as well.So would you choose there over UCI?
@finallyfree I think that is a hard question. Riverside isnt as awful as most people at my school say it is, but I guess I expect to get into a college thats a little better than Riverside. The CC route is good to save money, but there is no guarantee that you will end up in a nicer UC. I would personally take the safer route and go to UCR if that was my only option.
@iz57c4 I am leaning toward UCI, since I live in Cali, so my tuition is less expensive, I like the sun and it is a lot closer to home!
I just opened my email and 2 decision emails came up!
YES- Lewis and Clark
WL- Chapman
Great!
I think Muhlenberg is stronger than L&C so I suppose it’ll come down to what environment you prefer. Of course l&C could be a good compromise between a large school and a far away smaller school.
I am on spring break next week, so I am going to visit all of the schools!!
Just heard from UCLA, and not surprisingly it was a No.
This is from another thread, very interesting. no idea who this person is http://■■■■■■■■■■■■/home/fall-2014-last-year-frosh-waitlist-appeal-cancellation-numbers/
Rejected from Boston University:( This was one of my top choices.
I am happy that I have UCI at this point!
I do think there’s something wrong with your file. See if you can get the former GC or a trusted teacher to look at it.
UCI, this year, isn’t shabby at all - with the budget issues, UCs have become very very hard to get into.
@myos1634 I had my GC look at it and she said that there were no problems and she basically got mad at me for complaining :/. In my school it is SUPER hard to change GCs and if I do, all the GCs will know that I did that. I guess admissions are difficult this year…
Well, hm, if the issue is a bad rec from your GC counselor, of course she’s saying there are no problems in it, which is why people on your thread have suggested contacting your former GC, teachers, the principal, getting your parents involved…
And of course you’re not going to change GCs. You just need someone who looks over your file and checks that everything’s in order.
Yes, admissions are difficult this year, especially at the UCs because of the budget dispute; once the proper funds will have been released, then it’ll be okay and some kids will get off the waitlist like a flock of birds taking flight in the Fall.
@myos1634 Ill contact a teacher that I know and Ill get them to look through my application and see if there any problems. At my school, the principal does not really interact with the students too much, so I literally don’t know my principal at all, so it would not help if I asked him. I asked my friends to look through my common app and they did not find any problems with it. I am pretty happy that I got into UCI, since it was my last hope with the UCs and I am strongly leaning towards it, since it has a nice Economics program and it also is affordable for me!
Yes, UCI is an excellent university. And you have Muhlenberg, which is a great college, too.
Don’t forget that you may get off the waitlist (do accept those spots!)
It’ll depend on whether you want a large university close to home (downside: no advising/impersonal contacts/huge classes), or a LAC with interactive classes and a close-knit community (downside: cold, far from home).
Are you still waiting for a couple more acceptances?
@myos1634 I accepted all of my waitlist spots and I visited colleges and I like medium/larger colleges. I personally didnt like the small colleges that I visited and I liked the feel of larger universities in/near big cities.
I am waiting for the harder colleges that I applied to, so I do not think that will get accepted to them. The decisions that I am waiting for are: USC, UCB, Vanderbilt(tomorrow), Stanford, Tufts and NYU.
As shocking as it may seem to HS students, college acceptances do not follow a hierarchy. Each college evaluates differently, so you may get some more acceptances. Personally, I think your chances at NYU are decent (and not zero at a few others).
I vote for OP to go to UCI…
@rgosula I highly doubt that I will get into Stanford, etc, so I am probably going to commit to UCI. I am 90% sure that this point that I will go to UCI
I still think there is something wrong even if your GPA means that 49 kids have a better one at your school. Where are those other kids getting in? Also the next 10 after you. Forgetting about UCs, did any apply East? This is a public school? Your parents are taxpayers? They have a right to speak with the prinicapal? Sometimes not knowing someone gets more accomplished. At this point you are into UCI, so you are done if you want to be and no worse off if you ask to have your records reviewed. Wait unitl you get all decisions and then have your parents talk to the school. I was looking at the BU thread today and while you were not a slam dunk, you should have been accepted especially with a 34. Same with Brandeis. My friend had under 2000. She got rejected outright from her early decision school and got Brandeis. Good Luck
I second SaphireNY’s comment. Your application is far too strong to warrant these rejections, even in the competitive admissions climate this year. You really should have your application reviewed by a teacher or administrator. Since you’ve already been accepted to a number of schools, there’s no risk of retaliation on the part of the counselor if she did in fact write a bad recommendation.
Think about it like this, if the GC did write something, exposing it after your acceptances are in maybe prevent someone next year from finding themselves in the same spot. Taking that next step could save next year’s kids a lot of heartache.
To offer a contrary opinion, I think the OP may have just pulled the short straw on the crap shoot that the admissions process can be. It is very unfortunate and I agree the OP is a very strong candidate and “should” have had more acceptances. It is the same way that one kid pulled the lucky ticket and got into all 8 Ivy league schools last year. The crap shoot can go either way. The top UCs are very competitive and unpredictable. NU also this year rejected a National Merit Finalist. The outcomes of many of these schools look so haphazard. Kids with lowish stats get in while those with stellar looking apps like the OPs are rejected. In the “holistic” process, it is hard to tell because there is less transparency. There could have been very good reason such needing an oboe player or it could just be a reflection on an imperfect process. I think the fact that OP did get into UCI means the application must have looked decent. I also get the sense she is pretty happy with the UCI outcome.
