HELP! Rejected from Safety Schools!

Hey guys,
This has been a very depressing few days for me. I was rejected at my safety schools, Babson and Boston University and I will most likely be rejected from Harvard, NYU, Pepperdine, and Boston College. I don’t know why this is happening! I thought that Boston Unversity and Babson would be guarented because I’m a little above their stats. What do I do if I’m rejected from all the schools and what are the chances for an appeal? My stats are below. What is really depressing is that I thought that my scores were decent, and I thought my business was a huge hook. I might of not conveyed the business that well in my apps, but I wrote an excellent essay about my humanitarian work. HELP, what do I do? I’m borderline about to fall into depression because if I don’t get into any colleges, then what do I do? My parents would def. not let me skip a year of school to develop my business more. Is there any schools that I can still apply to? Sorry for the jumbled sentences, I’m just greatly confused

EC: Worked with several Non-profits in Southeast Asia during summer of 2002. Worked, Lived, Ate, Help with hundreds of poor villagers in the Sveg Reingh Providence. Bulit houses, established the infastructure for commertial farms. Started my own business selling sporting goods over the internet last year; had over half a million of sales. Wrote a business model and raised venture captial all on my own. Internship at Morgan Stanley shadowing a Finacial Advisor(1 year). President of eBay sales at a local small complany(20 employees), Varsity Tennis 4 years(Captain 2 years), 4 years of D.E.C.A, 2 Years of Key Club, Physics Club, Chemistry Club.

As you can see, academically I’m about average. As far as ECs go, I feel that is my strong point. Not many kids run a large business that started from scratch. Humanitarian work in a rural farm is somewhat unique also.

Applied to BC and Babson Early Action, but I was deferred to regular admissions.

Applied Regular Decision to:

Pepperdine
Boston University
NYU
Harvard

Apply to local colleges in your area ASAP. I'm assuming they have rolling decisions.

You heard from BU already? Didn't know they sent them out yet.

I just heard from BU today. The fact that I was rejected really scares me because BU was my safety school. All the schools in CA don't run on the rolling admissions so I don't know what to do. THIS IS REALLY DEPRESSING!

BU is not an appropriate safety school for someone like you. The average sat is 1300 and most candidates are in the top ten percent. Your SAT 2s aren't good. I'd say at best, BU was a match and you came up short. The other schools on your list are much more selective than BU. I think your best shot is Pepperdine...Isn't Clemson still taking apps?

What are the schools near you? Call them today. Find out about their application process. I am sure there are schools that will not reach their enrollment but are great schools. Get on the web and get very proactive. The worse that could happen, and its not at all a bad thing, and in fact could be a very could thing, is to enroll in a local community college for a year. Get some base classes under your belt, be sure and get great grades, and save some money from that business. You are not alone, you are not by any means just average.

One thing to note, the schools you applied to may have been somewhat of a reach. The business wouldn't make up for the test scores, which I find sad. Your ECs are amazing, and I know there is a school out there that would love to have you. Start the SEARCH!!! You will find your match.

First, stay calm. You haven't heard from your other schools. Ten years ago my nephew was rejected from every college he applied to. Good stats, great private prep school in NY. His counselor found him a spot at a small liberal arts in the midwest. He fully intended to transfer after one year but ended up having a great education, spent four years there and was very active in student government. At the end of his senior year, he got into every law school he applied to - Columbia, Georgetown, etc. He is a very successful lawyer and happy. So, if it really happens that you are rejected everywhere, talk with your gc - there is a web site where colleges list their openings. There are great colleges that would be happy to have you.

Do you live in CA or in Mass? I think you were a good match at both BU and Babson. But I have been hearing that BU was extremely selective this year. The BU threads are showing kids waitlisted with much higher stats than yours. I would not have considered any of your schools as safeties, however, as the accept rates are just too low for them. Your ECs are excellent, and I think you are an excellent candidate for a number of schools.

There is a website that lists schools that are still taking students after the deadlines. I will try to find it for you, but I believe it become relevant for this year in May. As other posters have suggested, you may want to look at some local schools. If you excell in any of them, you will be a tremendous candidate for transfer if you pick schools that take a decent number of transfers. My friend's son got into Northeastern this year after being rejected the year before after a grea term at a local college. My son's former teammate was accepted at BC after being rejected after he did a year a non select local catholic college. Both kids had lowish grades in highschools. Once you go to college , the college grades take precedent.

I do remember that U Pittsburgh and Rutgers both were on that list last year, and both are excellent schools. I have also heard that Indiana sometimes takes out of season applicants. Worth investigating. Do keep your chin up, as you are a fine applicant with a great resume. This whole college thing has gotten so out of hand just because of the sheer numbers these days. I think you are going to be fine, but there will be this period of uncertainty. BU is a large school and I think the adcoms did not carefully peruse your ECs. Do let us know what you are doing.

you know what I think? you applied to the wrong schools...your SAT I is not that good..SAT II aren't that good either...

BU was my safety-ish school (1450 sat) and I got rejected too

I'd apply to the same schools and some more below it for the Spring semester

Hey stop dissing him. There's no such thing as applying to wrong schools, only not applying to right schools.

As many have said, don't freak out. Look for alternatives and possiblilities.

If you do not get accepted at any of your schools, maybe your parents will think your taking off a year to focus on your business isn't such a bad idea afterall. You can then retake SATs to hopefully up your score and get some help in crafting a better application. You do have outstanding ECs and a professional could probably be of great help in writting a strong app.

Otherwise, if you are in CA, 2 years at a cc and then transfering to a UC is not such a bad option. It will leave you time for your business.

I'm sorry this has happened, but I'm wondering if you had any help in selecting safety schools from a counselor.

you either
1) find schools with rolling admissions
or
2)community college

i know community college isn't what most students here want to go to. In this case, it's your only choice if you can't find any other schools.

with your sat scores and gpa, i don't think you'll get accepted to harvard. but hey, you'll never know.

how were your essays? letter of recommendations? were your classes mostly honors and APs?

I"m pretty sure Arizona State takes apps up til April 1, and just got a postcard in today's mail from U of Oklahoma "reminding" my son that he has til April 1 to apply (and claim a scholarship)...so, there are two you can check out...you still have a week; might be tight for getting rec's and grades in, but you should be able to do everything else prior to 4/1 ... good luck...and don't worry: you'll get in somewhere and you'll be happy wherever that is!

If you are in a time crunch and used the common app., try http://app.commonapp.org/index.cfm?APP=AppOnline&ACT=Display&DSP=CollegeInfo to see which schools are still accepting applications. My aunt is a professor at Eckerd College in Florida, and I know its deadline is April 1st. Many of the smaller, often overlooked colleges are still very viable options.

Good luck!

Purdue is the best rolling school I have heard about.

Oh if Eckerd is still accepting applications DEFINITELY check them out. It's a wonderful school.

Someone on another thread mentioned the College of Wooster.

Do you havce a decent GC? Or could you get to a good educational consultant (check references!)? Because a person like this would have connections to schools and insider knowledge of places that might be happy to get a kid like you.

I second the advice not to panic, to wait till all the info is in. Last year in my D's HS there was a kid who applied to ten schools--- waitlisted or denied at 9 of them. In to one-- Harvard. Go figure!

Are you from Cali... did you get accepted to UC's?
