Help! Scholarships for successful petitioners for Kelley Direct Admit?

Our son was admitted to IU in December, but barely missed the GPA requirement for Direct Admit to Kelley. We were just notified yesterday that his petition for DA was approved, but, with everyone out for Spring Break, can't contact anyone for a week to ask important follow-up questions.

In the meantime, we need to determine whether we have any chance of receiving a decent fiancial aid package to take the next step of setting up a visit to IU on an upcoming Red Carpet day. We are trying to coordinate long-distance visits to other schools as well in the same limited timeframe, and it's coming down to crunch-time.

A major concern is that I am out of work, and can't see our son taking on such a crushing debt if we are unable to help as much as we'd like to. We submitted the FAFSA a while ago, but have yet to hear back on any NEED-BASED aid from IU (and several other schools still in the running that we have to set up visits for as well).

As far as IU MERIT scholarships go, my understanding was that DA students were automatically considered/awarded, but if one was not DA'd, there's nothing coming, especially for OOS. Does anyone know whether having one's DA appeal for Kelley accepted results in automatically receiving financial aid after all, or would our son still be shut out?

Any info & suggestions would be appreciated. Our son is really interested in a marketing degree at Kelley, combined with a minor in Sports Management. He also wants a big D-1 school with lots of student spirit, as well as opportunities for internships with sports teams. We've heard that IU/Kelley is excellent for that.

But finances are a huge hurdle. As much as we'd hate to let an opportunity like acceptance into Kelley slip thru his fingers, there's no way we can pretend finances don't matter. Our son is fortunate to have several other colleges where he has been admitted directly into their business schools/major - - many at a lower cost or with better financial aid packages than IU (UMass-Amherst, Temple, PSU, Drexel, S. Carolina, Maryland-CollegePark, UofD) - - for either pure Marketing or Marketing/SportsManagement.

Can others who have deliberated any of those other schools for Marketing and/or Sports Management along with IU offer us their opinions on the other schools/programs (both plusses & minuses) and what ultimately led them to favor IU over them (or not)?

Any thoughts on how to bring down the cost of IU to make it more competitive would be greatly appreciated. maybe there's something we've overlooked.

Thanks in advance!

The automatic scholarships have nothing to do with being a DA. They are only based on test scores and grades:

Non-Resident Criteria
IU Distinction - $44,000 ($11,000 per year)

The IU Distinction Scholarship is awarded to the best and brightest out-of-state students who meet each of the following criteria:

Out-of-state student (domestic and international)
Minimum SAT score of 1350 or minimum ACT of 31
Minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale

There is also an automatic scholarship for $5000

Did your son fill out the form/essays for the selective scholarships? If so he should be hearing soon. I received a letter on Friday saying financial aid packages will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.

I’m not familiar with the “automatic” $5k scholarship. Can you give more info?

When we first received his non-DA admission letter, we contacted them & asked if there was any financial aid package. We were told that “if you didn’t receive notification of any award, then you didn’t get any”. No mention was made of any other options, and I didn’t see any on-line elsewhere for OOS students. It was only just recently we came across the ones related to essays, which our son is in the process of submitting.

But otherwise, other than the competitive, essay-related scholarships (or possibly that $5k you mention), it’s just all-or-nothing at IU? Someone who has a 3.8 GPA gets $11k automatically, but someone who just misses the GPA by .1 or less gets nothing?

Thanks for any more clarification you can provide.

Congrats on acceptance to Kelley direct. I am so impressed with this program. Keep in mind once admitted he can apply for more scholarships each year.
Also I know several students who had a paid internship every year. Good luck

For the $5000 you need the following:

U Prestige - $20,000 ($5,000 per year)

The IU Prestige Scholarship is awarded to out-of-state students who meet each of the following criteria:

Out-of-state student (domestic and international)
Minimum SAT score of 1250 or minimum ACT of 28
Minimum GPA of 3.70 on a 4.0 scale

Keep in mind that some Universities recalculate GPA for scholarships/admission. I am majoring in sports management at IU and applied to some of the schools your son did. If you have any questions let me know

Thx for the add’l info & offer to answer further questions! Any experience you have with IU or some of the other schools in common applied to would be much appreciated! Should I ask them here, or via e-mail?

UDGradBE80…just sent you private message

just responded. thx!

congrats to your son! My daughter also missed the criteria by 1 point (test score) and has petitioned for direct admission but hasn’t yet heard from IU. How much time passed between when your son filed his petition and received word he’d been accepted?

Our daughter is a current OOS Freshman, Kelley DA at IU. I can only speak to our experience that we had last spring seeking scholarship opportunities. Daughter was a National Merit Finalist, 34 ACT and GPA of 4.6. Other than the automatic merit scholarship, $1000 Natl Merit Scholarship and $1000 Hutton Honors Scholarship, there were no other scholarships that she was awarded. Believe me…it was a terribly hard decision to make…could we afford to send her to IU where we knew we would owe $20K+/per year for tuition and room/board? We recieved no need based aid. We were told that there will be more scholarship opportunities as an upper classman. So…she’s almost done with her first year, we got it paid for, and she has a 4.0! We get through it by taking it month by month! Good luck making your decision! And we will wait to see if any further scholarships come along.

MomtoShelby - I believe your daughter has to apply for the additional scholarships that are offered. My daughter is a Kelley junior and she has applied for, and been awarded, additional scholarships each year through a common application on the IU website. Her most expensive year was the first year, and it has gotten less and less after that. There may be scholarships that she does not have to apply for, I just don’t know about those.

Michhoos…Yes Daughter has completed the application for the upperclassman Kelley scholarships…forgot to mention that! She also has been hired to tutor starting next Fall, so that will help at least with spending money! Every little bit helps!

I’m a junior in Highschool, just wondering…is the GPA requirement weighted or unweighted?
