HELP!!! School officials don't transmit completed application on time

What happens if the school official doesn't transmit the application on time? Am I automatically out even though I finished all my paper work on time?

Time isn’t up yet. Get on the horn with your school and start yelling/crying. If that doesn’t work, try again but have your parents yelling/crying.

I wish I could but the school closed by now and the only people still there are probably the janitors…

We may be in same boat - but I think maybe it’s our fault - I just got the parental consent email and signed it electronically - did that have to be done before the school could send their stuff??

^Yes.

Don’t give up. I think the National Merit folks are a little flexible on this deadline. If you have done your part, just keep encouraging your school to submit theirs. The school can to call the National Merit Corp and explain that you have done your part, and see what kind of extension they can have. When I spoke to someone at NM last week, he said that the October 10th deadline was not a firm deadline.

If you have family members who will help put pressure on the school to get this done, this is the time for them to get on the phone or go in to school.

Hi,
Is anyone sure of how this actually works?
Is it possible that the school does not actually get the info they need to submit until after today’s deadline for the students to submit the application?

Is it possible that the school has a different deadline?

Thanks

Schools do not have a different deadline. From the NM schedule: “October 10 - Schools transmit completed National Merit Scholarship Applications to NMSC using the OSA” You can find the complete schedule here.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

I have read that NM is more flexible with the school deadline and will allow an extension in some cases. I would call NM tomorrow and check with them. Both times I’ve talked with someone there, they have been very helpful.

Our GC worked late to get it done, so appreciative of her follow-up - I think we are all submitted!

Is there a way to tell if your gc submitted it or not?

On the NationalMerit.osa page, after you login, it should say:

“Your school official submitted your completed application to NMSC on 10/04/12.”

Obviously not on that specific date, though.

I don’t know if this is true, but my D’s GC said in the paperwork sent home to ignore the 10/10/12 completion date, and indicated that the date is actually 10/12/12. I hope so, because the GC has not completed the school’s part of the application as of this morning. I also heard that some high schools get extensions because of the number of NMF applicants (my D’s school has 146 NMSFs applying for NMF status).

My D’s GC also did not get it submitted… I just checked, and it still isn’t done. We only have 4 from our school, so the “volume” argument probably won’t wash. Hopefully they really are soft on the deadline. D’s stuff was submitted on 10/9. Sigh.

Does the “School Complete” message show on the NMSFs PARENTS’ NMFC site or only on the NMSF’s site???

Has anyone noticed a delay of at least one day from the time a school said they submitted – to the time your online account shows “school submitted”? Or, has your account been updated in less than a day?

This morning, my DD’s page has the date her school submitted (10-9) but my parent page says simply “Application Submitted” and then a statement that DD submitted her portion and the PDF is no longer available for viewing…no statement that the school submitted as is shown on her student page.

But, at least, I know it is done.

Not exactly the same situation, but our HS failed to submit their info for the corporate special scholarship a couple of years ago. We got a letter (at home) from NMSC about it, and they allowed the school to submit late. A few moments of panic when that letter arrived!

Our GC confirmed yesterday that “there is some flexibility” on the date for the high school to get it submitted. She plans to submit today. They have some NMSF every year, and almost all go on to be NMF, so I trust her to know the ropes on this. Whew… one app done. Onward to college applications!
