My senior daughters list of schools is long and random from very small to very large. Has no idea what she wants to study. We live in NYC she wants to stay within a 3 hour or so driving distance from home. She has a 3.5 unweighted gpa and a 3.9 weighted. Her SAT scores are Math 600 Verbal 610 and writing 630. Can anyone suggest some schools to start with. Cost is a factor and she does not want to go to a SUNY school. Thanks for your help.

Syracuse, Fordham, Skidmore

Trinity College, Connecticut College, Union College, Lafayette College, Hamilton College, College of the Holy Cross, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Bryn Mawr College, Goucher College.

Kings Point

If cost is a factor you need to maybe figure out whether or not you will qualify for financial aid by filling out the FAFSA calculator. From there, I'd probably recommend that you spend $15 on the US News College Premium Edition on line and do some searchs for schools plugging in your daughter's parameters. Then go to each of those schools on that site and click on Tuition & Financial Aid and see how good they are about giving out money.

If you don't qualify for financial aid, but feel you can't swing the $45000/year for a private, then you probably need to investigate merit aid money. That's harder to get, and especially if your child is not a TOP student. US News will also show that by school (but it is hard to tell on there WHO gets the money -- many scholarships are specifically designated for minorities, or musicians, or whatever).

Off the top of my head, I'd say your daughter has a slim-to-none chance of merit money at either Syracuse, Fordham, Skidmore, or nearly all of the colleges listed by IsleBoy.

There are some out-of-state public options you might consider (cheaper than privates, more expensive than SUNY) such as U Delaware, Penn State, U Pittsburgh, and I'm sure there are many others.

Good luck. NOW is the time to be thinking about money...
