I just got accepted to the Newhouse for the advertising program as an international transfer. Honestly I didn't think I would get in so I didn't think much about actually going to Syracuse but now that I got accepted, here is the struggle....

I was gonna go to some college in CA since I have lived in southern California and the life there really fits me. My 1st choice was University of San Diego (communication studies) and I'm still waiting for their decision. I really wanted to live in CA and locate myself there after graduation as well but now that I'm accepted to Newhouse, I know this is too good a chance to miss, with the great reputation on their public communication program. I (&my parents) couldn't care less about tuition/financial aid so the cost is not really a problem but I really don't think I can fit in...like I'm too used to the weather in Southern California, seriously I could get depressed at such a place that is so cold and not sunny (this has actually happened so I'm not over exaggerating). So I feel like I would do better at U of SD. But again, as I want a solid foundation for getting a job after graduation, Syracuse is too good to turn down.

So my questions are;

1) How is the climate/overall atmosphere at Syracuse actually like? How bad is the winter?

2) How is the student life at Syracuse like? Do they go out a lot? Are there many places to go out on weekends/holidays? Are there lots of stuff to do on Campus even if you aren't in greek system? (I'm not interested in drinking scene though)

3) I know their journalism is one of the best programs in nation but is advertising program as prestigious? Do they actually have better chances finding a job?

4) Considering my situation, do you think turning down Syracuse for U of San Diego is reasonable?

sorry for long questions but thanks in advance!

The winter is terrible, and can be very grey for months. If you are effected by that it could hurt your grades. You will need new winter clothes and it is bitter cold.

My son will be a freshman at Syracuse in the fall. He was accepted to the Newhouse School - Whitman School of Management dual program. We toured SU for the first time just a couple weeks ago after the May 1st deadline for first year students. For first year students, Newhouse received 5,000 applicants, they accepted only 800 of them. Out of the 800, 397 accepted. Hence, if you’ve been accepted to Newhouse, I wish you a hearty congratulations!

Newhouse is three buildings combined into one. It’s a rather impressive and huge compound. Like many of the colleges and the main library, it’s got a cafeteria built-in. If you end up taking Marketing courses at the Whitman Management School, it’s equally impressive in a very different way and is two blocks from Newhouse.

1) Weather - yes, it’s going to snow over 100 inches during a typical winter. It’ll get down below 25 degrees. You can walk from any building to any other building on campus in 10 minutes or less. It’s not a sprawled out campus. If you decide to go anyway despite your lack of tolerance of cloudy weather, Philips makes a special light called the goLite. It’s supposed to help overcome problems like you’re describing. If you were to go visit the place now you’d find it deceptively gorgeous.

2) Only around 25% of the campus is greek, though it does have a reputation as a party school. SU has a well developed system of learning communities. Students with common interests can live together, share common interests and common classes.

3) Check out the Adverting School website. They claim to be top 5 in the US according to one study.

4) It seems you haven’t presently got USD as an option (though it sounds like you expect to get in). You can always bide your time until your transfer commitment deadline to decide.

Best of luck.

I agree with Deuga7 - truly terrific school but when you mentioned the weather for transfer students its a problem. You do not live in dorms that are close to school and at this late a date you will need to find an apartment. The weather in winter can be below zero and grey between the months of October through March. The best times of the year in Upstate NY are mid-May (yes it has snowed in May) until mid-October where it can still range in the 80’s. Truly I am not discouraging you, the education is excellent, but while you are getting that you may be miserable if you are used to the hot weather. I am telling you from experience. Now with that said, if you want to learn to ski or snowboard, and if you feel like you can give it a go, then it wouldn’t be an educational mistake.

I’m looking to apply to SU- Newhouse as well. What were your academic results (GPA, SAT, Extra curricular, etc)?

I have a 3.3 GPA at the moment (will be a senior after the summer) so I may be able to get it up with my first semester Senior Year grades. I am in the IB. I do not take the IB Diploma… however I take ALL IB classes.
Higher Level- Econ, English, Biology
Standart Level- Math Studies, Theatre Arts, Ab-initio Spanish
My senior year I am taking a year long Journalism course ( I did not take it Junior year because it was not offered… it is a new course)
My first semester as a Junior I did not do do well (since it was my first year at the school and first year at the IB program as a whole… I was previously at an AP school… did not know much about the IB). However I learnt from my mistakes and ended up doing much better second semester Junior year.
1st sem- 3.04 GPA
2nd sem- 3.56 GPA

Throughout my HS career I have:

Freshman year: I took part in a school competition called “Poetry Out Loud” and I won first place out of many upperclassman.

Soph year: I tried out for my school Forensics team (Oral Interpretation)- and I made the “back up” person… did not make it because it was very competitive… all seniors.

I was also Vice President of a club at my school called SPAR (Students for the Protection of Animal Rights). I am an animal lover and have done a lot of donation and fund raising for the local animal shelter in Singapore.

Junior year: AT MY NEW SCHOOL… I again tried out for the Forensics team (Oral Interpretation: Comic and Serious). We had to take part in 2 events. I made it and ended up winning Silver place for both my events!
This was a competition between many schools in surrounding countries called: MESAC (Middle East South Asia Conference)… yes I am an international student.

I have had two jobs in Singapore. I worked as a waitress at two different restaurants during my breaks which was a good experience.

So yeah…
Do you think I have a chance at SU- Newhouse?

Also to answer your questions:
I have done a lot of research as well as attended an SU workshop where I spoke to current SU students and Alumni.

1) How is the climate/overall atmosphere at Syracuse actually like? How bad is the winter?
Everyone says…. IT IS VERY COLD… but if you have the right clothing (a good jacket and warm boots) you’ll be fine. They say it is manageable and during the other seasons the weather is very nice. They say that the cold brings people together and in NO WAY is it gloomy during the winters. Everyone is out and about… partying and doing this and that. So don’t worry about that!!!

2) How is the student life at Syracuse like? Do they go out a lot? Are there many places to go out on weekends/holidays? Are there lots of stuff to do on Campus even if you aren’t in greek system? (I’m not interested in drinking scene though)
The alumni said that SU is one of the most welcoming schools. Everyone is out making friends and its all good. It is a VERY diverse school and people are respectful of your choices and culture. One guy said he had a friend who did not drink at his time at SU and he has an amazing experience at SU and many friends… SO don’t worry about that. Yes there are a lot of places to go out, always things going on on campus. A lot of the school are NOT in the Greek System… so either way you will be fine.

3) I know their journalism is one of the best programs in nation but is advertising program as prestigious? Do they actually have better chances finding a job?
I talked to two advertising majors … and they said GO TO NEWHOUSE…amazing teachers, amazing facilities, amazing name. They got jobs in Dubai 4 days after the graduated. It is definitely a very good school that gives you a head start in the career world.

4) Considering my situation, do you think turning down Syracuse for U of San Diego is reasonable?
Honestly it all comes down to what you think. But if you’re just turning SU down mainly because of the weather… it’s not the type of winter that is gloomy AT ALL. It is a top school for what you want to do. I don’t think you should turn it down.

Thank you everyone for really helpful responses! Sorry for commenting this late though :\ I got pretty busy and haven’t checked college confidential for a while.

ANYWAYS,

I have finally committed to Syracuse! I did actually get accepted to my original top choice school, which is University of San Diego, but I thought going to the Newhouse would give me more opportunities and since I would have to pay their 4k tuition anyways, I better choose the one that would have better program/prestige/future prospective. I still doubt I can ever get comfortable at their climate, I told myself it’s only for 2yrs and decided to think it as an educational experience.

So thank you guys so much! After hearing all there, I’m now excited about the life waiting at SU! :)

@dancingirl15

ayyyee I think you made the right decision. Hope you have an amazing time at SU!!! Good luck!

Would be amazing and so helpful if you read and answerd my comment above. I also inboxed you the same thing

@meg31776 Thank you so much for your post! It was really helpful

as for your question, it’s kinda long story so I’ll send you a msg later but my HS GPA was 3.8 and college GPA was 3.78 or something.

Hey Syracuse weather isn’t that bad.
I’ve lived in Upstate NY my whole life, in Rochester which is about an hour and a half away.
We get a lot of snow but its totally managable.
Buy all of your winter clothes here in NY when you arrive. Destiny USA is one of the biggest malls in America so you can find everything you need.
There is a lot of great places to ski and snowboard around Syracuse, plus ice skating and snow sledding!
The weather is not as terrible as it seems, it will take some getting used to but its not bad.

I’m also attending Syracuse as a transfer in the fall!
