help! so confused...

I'm applying to Georgetown and the essay question has given me a lot of trouble, along with any other open ended questions. It is basically:

Write an essay that you feel best describes you

I am recycling most of my essays from other universities but I can't seem to find one that I can recycle well. The whole thing about "best describing" me is nebulous and scary at the same time. So I had a setback essay but I'm not sure that it best describes me. Now I'm thinking I might write about where I'm from and how it's shaped who I am but I'm not really sure.... any kind of help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

well, we don't know you, so helping is kinda hard.

However, I'd suggest you make a list a words, phrases, etc. that you feel describe you. Then highlight the things you think are most important. That'll give you an idea of where to start, anyhow.

It seems that everything i think of is either too broad, too narrow, or doesn't fit or whatever. I have one about diversity that I definietly think is a no. Then there's one about coming from Iowa and how I want to share and gain perspectives, or the setback one... about how I was horrible at tennis and worked really hard to improve (kind of cliche).

Have you done what I said above?

Recycling essays is not always your best bet. While it works well sometimes, and can save you much time, it doesn't always fit the prompt.

Yes, a while ago. That is actually how I came up with the tennis idea (wanted to portray hard work, etc), so I began writing it. I THEN found that it also fit my setback prompt I needed. So it's not that I am opposedto writing a new essay, I'm just confused and unsure that my original idea was that great

Well, it all depends on how you write it, but your original idea can work.

An essay I used for a topic like this was how I never cleaned my room. Not cleaning my room doesn't describe all of me (and while it describes part, laziness isn't really something I wanted to be known for), but the other things I included helped describe other parts of me. So basically, almost any topic can work for a prompt this open ended.
