Help Sought - NYU Gallatin

I'd appreciate advice or a PM from any parents of a kid who has won admission to Gallatin concerning ins & outs of the admission process. My daughter has asked for my help with the process of creating an appropriately individualized application package for the school of individualized study. It makes sense to me for her to submit supplemental material beyond the basic application -- but its not clear whether that will be considered or where it should be directed. Unfortunately, the NYU web site doesn't have any info about contact information for specific ad com representatives who might be able to answer these questions. (The pitfalls of aiming for a specialized small school enveloped inside a huge university).

Who makes Gallatin admission decisions? Is Gallatin faculty involved in some ways? Is there a separate ad com geared to Gallatin, or specific members of the ad com assigned to Gallatin? They say that students who are incorporating a performing arts component into their majors are "not required" to submit creative materials -- but if they do, will such materials be considered?

Gallatin seems like such a perfect fit.... if only my daughter can make them see that.

calmom, my D is at Tisch, not Gallatin but I might be able to help you with some of your general questions. The Admissions office has different reps who work on the admissions decisions of each NYU college, so the Gallatin ones would be responsible for the Gallatin applications. My understanding is that NYU does not consider supplemental materials for ANY of its applicants (programs which require an artistic review wouldn't consider such materials supplemental) but you might want to confirm this by calling Admissions and inquiring about Gallatin. All of the offices are closed until Jan. 4, though. I'm sure you've seen this page but I'll include it, just in case, for contact info.

What type of 'performing arts' component is your D interested in?

I'm not a parent, but I am a kid who got into NYU (GSP, though) as a freshman and is now applying to Gallatin as a transfer student. I attended an NYU information session, and the guy who spoke there was actually one of the adcoms (I think he's actually head of the adcom - all of the specific Gallatin questions on the admissions message board get forwarded to him...) for Gallatin - his name is Jeff Bates, and you can call the admissions office and ask to speak to him or email him (calling is better as he is slow to respond to email) at jeff.bates@nyu.edu. He is quite helpful and very willing to assist you in any way he can.

alwaysamom is correct - NYU does not consider any supplemental material. They are very adamant about applicants only sending what they ask for. Many have asked your question on the admissions message board, and an admissions rep says that even if you anticipate including performing arts in your curriculum they do not want you to send supplementary creative materials.

In the school application, it suggests that Gallatin applicants use the last short answer question and the essay to show how and why Gallatin is a match for you. They also welcome a separate statement from the applicant that tells them how Gallatin will help them achieve their academic and professional goals. I highly recommend that your daughter, even if she is using the common app, complete these statements - everyone that got into Gallatin from my high school (4 people) did so.

I would say that your daughter should just, more than ever, play up what makes her special - and who better than her mom to help her see that! (My mom was a big help in coming up with ideas that really helped me with my app...)

Again, I'm not a parent and I didn't gain admission to Gallatin directly, but just thought I would offer up my perspective and some info that might help you. Good luck to you and your daughter!

Thank you so much, collegegirl! - this is exactly the sort of info we were looking for. (Especially the email address of a real person at NYU who can answer questions in a more official capacity)
