I need to know if taking a year long AP class starting 2nd semester is worth it to raise class rank.

I had to spend last year in Mexico, which this school used as excuse to mess up my schedule since the beginning of the year. This was the most I could fix it, and I know that it's very lacking. The school I have to go to now has an IB program, but since I'm a junior, I was not allowed to join and can only take a few of their classes.

this is my current schedule for junior year.

-World Studies
-AP US History
-AP Language and Lit
-College Prep Reading
-Honors Geometry
-Physics
-Ethnic Studies

I took Algebra 2 freshman, and basically took the same thing last year, so they put me in Geometry which I hadn't taken.

I have all A's for 1st semester, and haven't been able to see my rank but fear it will be low because other kids have more credits.

I went to my counselor wanting to switch out of College Prep Reading and Ethnic Studies which are a waste of time, and she only gave me the option of switching to AP Spanish instead of Ethnic Studies.
Spanish is my first language, so I asked her if this would look bad, but she assured me it wouldn't.
The problem is that the classes are supposedly year long, so would a semester of a class even count?
I took French since 7th grade, and in high school, I skipped to French 3-4 freshman year.
Would this count as 2 years of a language?

Please help! I'm very scared that this decision could end up seriously affecting my chances of getting into the U of I.

I really need the help tonight, because tomorrow morning I have to change it.
I’m having problems with the counselor because it seems like she’s always too busy for me, so I need to go in with a firm decision of what to do.
This is really distressing me.
I feel like my future is being compromised for a situation I have no control over.

Yes, take the AP Spanish. It could be hard depending on how good your Spanish is - lots of native speakers don’t have the written grammar down - but do it. It shows a lot more rigor than ethnic studies, even if you get a B.

The first thing you need to do is get out of Geometry. No junior ever takes that class unless they are very, very behind in mathematics. Take it online or skip it; you should not be in that class as a junior, regardless of whether or not you have taken it yet.

I wish I would have seen this earlier!
I talked to the Vice Principal when I got called down to congratulate me for the academic decathlon, and he pretty much told me that I should just wait until next year for any new class and that I was completely fine with the classes I had.
I know I’m not, but it seems like they think the whole school wants to go to community college.

Yeah, I regret having listened to them about the Geometry but it was either that or retake Algebra 2 for the 3rd time.
I don’t even know if it’s worth switching 2nd semester anymore. It’s going to count as half a year of the class and i don’t know if that’s the same.
Would taking some classes over the summer or at a community college somewhere help me with this?
Or else, pretty much everything is ruined.

if you think you can make up the work, go for AP spanish since it’s more rigorous; even if one your transcript it will only count as a half year course, i’m assuming you would still take the AP test and if you got a 4 or a 5 it would probably look especially good considering you weren’t in the class for the whole year.
and if you have any concerns about your schedule that can be fixed with summer courses and you’re up to it, i think that’s a great idea. good luck! :)
