The May 1st deadline is just a couple weeks away and I'm completely torn between University of Maryland and Syracuse. I was admitted to the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at Maryland (and also the Scholars program there). I know Syracuse is extremely cold but it has a great journalism program. On the other hand, Maryland is just around the corner from Washington DC.

Please provide opinions/pros and cons. Any insight is appreciated!!

Newhouse is definitely the stronger program if you’re looking for journalism and actually does have a program actually in D.C. (hopefully you were already aware of this). A combination double major of journalism and public policy is very popular. They have an awesome study abroad program, too.

The Syracuse alumni (especially from Newhouse) network is very, very active, also.

I don’t know anything about U Maryland, but when D1 was looking for good communication programs, it did not pop up on our radar.

I was going to say U MD all the way until I saw that you would be going to Newhouse. Are you OOS for U MD? Depending on the financials–and on how certain that this is what you REALLY want to pursue–I think you should go to Newhouse.

happymomof1: Yes, there are differences in cost…however, I did receive $8k a year merit scholarship from Syracuse, which isn’t anything to write home about, but it makes it do-able. Maryland is somewhat less expensive, but I’m trying to prioritize other factors over the cost at the moment.

Consolation: Yes, I would be out of state for Maryland-- I’m from New Jersey. I’m pretty sure that I would like to pursue journalism, or at least something within the communications field.

I know a student from NJ who is attending Maryland because he wasn’t accepted to Newhouse at Syracuse. He is happy at Maryland.

Still, I think that Newhouse is the stronger program, and would have better job possibilities afterward, so if it isn’t too much more expensive, that is where I would lean. Maryland is also strong though, so I don’t think you will go wrong either way.

One of my kids looked at Syracuse for public policy/IR but decided it wasn’t worth that much money over UMD (in-state). There were several very decent schools he considered where he came to the same conclusion, so this wasn’t a specific knock on Syracuse.

My concern would be the amount of debt you’d accrue to attend Newhouse vs. the realities of the job market for journalists these days. If you’d have to borrow a lot, I’d give it a good deal of thought.

countingdown - but if he has a scholarship from Syracuse (albeit not a huge one) and has to pay OOS for UMaryland, how much difference could there be?

I truly have no idea. I just know that paying OOS tuition can be the equivalent of paying for a private school sometimes (except places like NC, NY, TX, CA and a few others). I don’t know what UMaryland’s OOS tuition is.
