Help! Syracuse to Providence?

So im a freshman at Syracuse University. I like the school somewhat soo far but i constantly find myself really missing my home, Providence. Syracuse is a good school but the thing is that the surrounding area is SOOO DEPRESSING and you could not pay me to live in upstate NY. I applied ED and thought it was incredible after my visit. I have always been a PC Friar and have been highly thinking of transferring there. Getting in will not be an issue as i have huge connections and a pretty strong gpa and resume to boot. GPA at SYR= 3.4 plus EC's. I am wondering if the move makes sense. I am going to give Syracuse the entire year and will apply for transfer if nothing changes by 2nd semester. So how can i compare Syracuse to Providence. Finance major btw
A big part of it is that i miss my family, i come from a very close family and i think of them everyday.

You have to learn to live away from your family, and college is the best time to do that.

Nothing against Providence, but Syracuse is a better brand name (more connections, etc.)

Ask yourself if you’ll regret leaving syracuse, and if the answer is no, then go for it.

Any insight on schools other than providence in the new england area?
Boston College
Northeastern
??
Is Syracuse really THAT much better than Providence?

I’m not saying Syracuse is better. It’s just a bigger name. You can go to most places and will find people who know Syracuse.

With your GPA, I’d say look at BU and Northeastern. BC might be a reach.

Im just soo confused. I know that Syracuse is a bigger school with a bigger name and great alumni connections. BUt it has not lived up to my expectations in any facet. It is incredibly diverse, the atmosphere is terrible, weather(obviously), i dont find that it has a “community” feel and my family is soo far away. I constantly think of going home and it sort of runs my life.
Providence is a great school and i have been in contact with BC, their average accepted transfer GPA is 3.6 so if i work very hard next semester its within my reach. Any other New England schools that are very good for me?

“It is incredibly diverse” - how is this negative? I’m just wondering because that is the reason I respect Syracuse. It has one of the most economically diverse student bodies I have ever seen.

My older brother went to Syracuse, and he didn’t complain about a lack of community. I think that you’re letting your homesickness get the best of you. I think you’ve made up your mind that you aren’t happy there, so you’re digging yourself into a deep hole. I know this sounds harsh, but you have to learn to live away from your family. I think this is a cyclic thing and I think once you try to make the best out of Syracuse, you will learn to enjoy it. You’ve been there 3 months.

Do you want to go to a very homogeneous school? Then, BC is a good fit. However, they may accept an average gpa of a 3.6, but they don’t accept that many people. Keep that in mind.

And to be completely honest, if you aren’t looking for diversity, there aren’t many schools in New England that will be a good fit.
You can try Holy Cross and Dartmouth.

Again, I’m not trying to sound harsh, but being homesick is the worst reason to transfer. Missing your family makes those short breaks all the better.

I havent made up my mind though. I know all the great opportunities that Syracuse offers me. Maybe im with the wrong friend group or something. It is tough to be away though and i had very high expectations for this school

My D is also at Syracuse. She misses her friends too from home because she can’t seem to make the same kind of friends yet at Syracuse. I say YET because you are only 3 months in. You need to give it a chance. You obviously have not ventured too far off campus. The surrounding area is actually quite beautiful. There are wonderful places to hike, bike, ski (when we get snow). I realize you probably do not have a car as you are a Fresh. Have you gotten involved in any organizations on campus? Why not consider a joining a club or APO (Alpha Phi Omega) community service frat. It would be a great way for you to meet other kids and get involved in the Syracuse community. Syracuse is very community minded. You will only get out of it what you bother to put in. You complain about the weather but honestly it has been the most beautiful fall we have had in years. Good luck with your decision but don’t blame this on SU.

I respect a degree from Providence more than one from Syracuse for what that is worth. Syracuse is a big school much like a state school. It is going to have name recognition as a result of it’s sheer size. It is an okay school but really more like an expensive state school than a prestigeous private school. If you will be happier at Providence then transfer. Providence is a good school and you will get as good (or better) an education there as you will at Cuse.

I think transferring is a very personal objective. It’s about you. Go where you will be the most happy, and make sure to discuss this situation with your professors. You have a good GPA, and with proper EC’s I could imagine Providence college is a match. Also, I’m with you on Providence being a great place to be. I’m trying to transfer to a college in Providence as well! Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1252109-transferring-out-nyu-help-me-fellow-ccers.html

Yeah its very tough. Homesickness and a LOT of other things are kind of consuming me. Its not that Syracuse is bad i just dont think its for me. Ive been in the Providence College culture my entire life so i think thats my best choice but im gonna give it the year here. It just tough because i had very high expectations here and loved it when i visited last year. It happens tho

Remember that bad decisions = the best stories.

I can tell you, if you are completely homesick and want to leave, LEAVE! The school name that you graduate holds little to no credit when your in the work place.

All of the managers I talk to at my current position as a Nuclear Technical Specialist say that “We don’t care what school you go to for a 4 year degree, it just shows that you are persistent and you learned the theory. We will teach you our way. If you went on to a Master’s degree, then it matters.”

You have to make the choice, not us. Its easier said than done but you’ve made your mind up and you should follow your heart without any regret. Just don’t keep thinking about it.
