Hi, i will be a freshman during fall 2007. i was wondering if it is possible to take Bio 13 (with lab) as a freshman even though I do not have a 5 in AP Bio (didn't offer course in my high school), which tufts said would make you elligible for the course in freshman year. does anyone know if tufts is lenient on policy course requirements, or is it 100% positive that i won't be able to take bio 13 without the 5 in AP Bio? thanks for reading, hopefully someone can help!

You can take it, I think, but you will very likely do quite poorly. It's a weed-out course, that tries to get those wannabe pre-meds who aren't going to hack it out early in the process...

that's not true at all!

there is no requirement to take bio 13 as it is an intro course. True, most people have taken AP bio first, so you may be slightly disadvantaged. That said, if you work hard it is not impossible to get a good grade. I took intro chem last year without ever taking AP chem and I did pretty well. And I know many other people in the same circumstances who did the same in both bio and chem.

If you are premed or thinking about being premed or are just interested in bio, do not let anybody's opinion sway you from taking the course. If you truly like bio/science/premed, you will do just fine.

And don't be worrying about this now, you will get to school and have all these advisors and people everywhere helping you. Just have a fun rest of the summer!

The classes are designed to somewhat level the playing field even if students have had AP experience in the past. You should be okay - but be warned. You won't get much grading lenience as this is one of the few weedout classes at Tufts.

I also heard that a lot of people do Bio 14 before Bio 13. Something to consider.
