I am applying REA to Stanford and I know that two letters need to be submitted. I participated in a program called the NJ Governor's School Program this summer. It's a prestigious program in the state and is sponsored by the educational system of the NJ. The instructor I had there, I feel, knows me better than any other teacher I had in my high school and would write a great rec for me.

I attended this program in the summer going into my senior year. Can I send this recommendation in place of one from my school? Stanford's website said they want a teacher who taught a core subject in the applicant's high school and this would not really fit the criteria.

What kind of instructor is it? If it’s a fairly high-ranking one (director of the program or something like that) you could send an additional letter in. Be warned though, you should only send in extra recs if it’s going to a super amazing one and if your recommender is worth noting. Ask yourself these things first.

But no, you can’t substitute this instructor for your regular teachers. The recommendation forms go in detail about your classroom/grading performance.
