HELP THIS CHILD - PART 2 !

Hey Guys…
after all the research I have a list of business schools to choose from .

The list was cut down from 8 to 4.

For first ,
I am an international undergrad from INDIA and looking for a school with the best collegiate experience ,i.e, academics , party , job placement ,etc.

The schools are : -

  • PENN STATE ALTOONA (2 years in Altoona then 2 years in University Park)
    • Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis {IUPUI} (Indirect to Kelly School of Business with $7000 off every year)
    • San Diego State University ( I like the party scene here and after college placement is decent)

The above colleges have many things in common which makes me THINK …

So guys…Please help this child to choose which school is the best for ACCOUNTING as thats my major :stuck_out_tongue: .

Thanks - in - Advance

I think you can do fine from any of them (just get great grades). But from that list, I’d probably vote for SDSU.

At SDSU I believe everyone goes in as “pre-business” and then get admitted to the business school after they’ve completed theirr lower division “weed out” classes. So there is the possibility of not getting admitted to the business school (basically due to low grades).

I would consider the paths to business school and accounting major at all three schools.

Lastly, if your goal is to be a CPA, you’ll need 150 credit hours. Many (most?) students get a masters in accounting or taxation. You can do so at the same school or go to another university for a 1 year masters.

@arc918 same with IU whose business school is ranked #10 IN US .

So confused right now…anyone else ?

You listed 3 not 4 choices from what I can see.

I’d go with SDSU. It seems like it will be the most complete 4 year experience and it is in a great location. But I’d hold off on too many parties.

As to the other choices, I just don’t know about IUPUI. I’m not a fan of the Penn State 2+2 as you would have to move campuses after 2 years.

Finding a good job is why you go to school. IU Kelley has a 95% placement while Kelley Indianapolis has a 96%. Great options.Food for thought.

@happy1 thats the whole point of doing the 2+2 ; going to UP after 2 years that aslo into the Smeal College of Business…makes me wonder why not go PSU…

@Goodkidsdad any stats about SDSU ?

Anyone else…with extra suggestions…please

Certainly go to PSU if you want. But you asked for opinions. I don’t personally like 2+2 programs. I feel it is disruptive in many ways to have to switch campuses after two years. It is disruptive personally (leaving friends you made and going into a huge school where people have firmly formed friendships already in place) as well as academically (moving to a new and much larger environment – you will not be used to it, others who have been there the last 2 years will already be comfortable). Plus are you definitely 100% into both Smeal and UP? Or do you have to keep a certain GPA to qualify? Those are factors to consider as well.

And as I said I don’t know about IUPUC but the Kelley that is ranked #10 is housed at Indiana University, Bloomington (not IUPUI). I don’t know how the branch at this school would be received and I don’t know what an indirect admission is. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-overall

@happy1 I have to maintain a 3+ gpa to be considered for transfer…IUPUI has 96% placement rate where as IUB has 95% , then comes SDSU…being located in cali and having good surroundings…plus decent placement makes me crave.

I am getting confused day by day…

The high placement rate is nice of course…but there may be a difference in the types/quality of jobs people get out of the two campuses. I don’t know the answer but I do know that no one statistic gives the full picture.

Anyway, good luck deciding.

@MrAccountant I replied to your other post but I wanted to say, with the 2 + 2 program, you will move to UP as a group. You will know all of your friends that you have made at Altoona when you go to UP. Like I said in my other post, if my son did not get into UP for accounting he would have gone to Altoona for the 2 + 2 program. It’s an easy transition as long as you maintain a 3.2 gpa.

Waiting for more suggestions/replies…

Regarding:

I apologize, but this discussion has been around for a long time and debated hotly. But US News always uses the flagship in their listing. Others (Forbes etc.) look at curriculum, faculty, placement and consider the Kelley campuses as the same school (as does the Dean). And rank Kelley very high (without regard to campus). There is no “branch” for Kelley.

IUB Kelley is a sought after degree across the country. Kelley Indianapolis is VERY connected to Midwest companies and the placement (if you make it through) is almost automatic as evidenced by the placement.

Thanks for the info on Kelley. I knew Kelley at Bloomington was a top notch business school, but I wasn’t clear on the exact relationship with Kelley at IUPUI.

You should apply to every appropriate school that you may excel at. Then visit if you can.

^^^OP has already applied to and been accepted by schools. OP is from India and unlikely to have an opportunity to visit.

Kelley (IU) is the best of the 3. But your not direct admit so you’d have to make sure you fulfill the requirements to get in on your second year.

Of course living in SD >>> Indiana, so if that’s most important, than go with SDSU.

@insanedreamer what would you do ?

LOl those are three very different places.
