Help This Neo-Hippy Pick A School

Correct. The proper term is “hippie.” “Hippy” just means you have big hips. It says nothing about your personality or school preferences.

You would find groups to fit into for sure at University of Michigan or Berkley. Assuming your post is not a joke… and I’m not at all sure.

neo-hippy=fake hippie?

The OP doesn’t seem to think that the colleges listed in my previous post are prestigious enough. This doesn’t sound like a hippie attitude, but more like a prep attitude.

PS–I went back and noticed that the OP is considering Fordham. There is no way this OP is a hippie of any kind if she is seriously considering attending a Catholic university.
Sounds more like a wanna-be hippie—someone who wears Bohemian clothing and wants to project a certain image.

AHA!! I knew OP, even if a ■■■■■, meant hipster! This definition even includes the same stores mentioned: [Urban Dictionary: hipster](Urban Dictionary: hipster)

And true confession: I only know about hipsters because ds dressed up as one for Senior Hipster Day! That’s also how I learned about “bros.”

what happened with NYV vs. fordhham?

Still laughing over the ‘hippie’ vs ‘hippy’ definitions.

I guess most of the real hippies are now hippy?

lol

Emeraldkity - there are trust fund hippies! That’s a whole 'nother topic.

Anyway, for anyone so included, google Dov Charney who is the head of American Apparel. He’s a rather disgusting pig of a man.

Ok, I’m guessing this is a ■■■■■. But if you are for real:

Why the South? Okay, you’re from NYC and want to get out of the North/East Coast. But both the midwest and the West coast would generally serve you so much better. For instance:

Midwest: UMich, UChicago (not exactly hippy, but less preppy than the schools you’ve listed), and if you suck it up about the LAC, you also have Oberlin, Carlton, McAlester, Grinnell…

West Coast: All sorts of options! You have the UCs for large research unis (Berkley seems like a good fit if you can get in, and in general they will be better for you want many southern schools), and then tons of good LACs: The Claremont Colleges (try for Pomona for prestige, if you care, and hang out with the Pitzer kids if Pomona’s not hippy/hipster enough for you), Reed, Everygreen State if you want really out there, etc…

Pizzagirl - those would be trustafarians

PG, ewwww. I just read the Dateline interview with him.

I never even heard of American Apparel or Dov Charney…
I need to get out more.

edit:
yds, i just read it. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Colorado
UC Santa Cruz
Northern Arizona U.

The screen name “Skater Girl” and the term hippie seem to be at odds.

The ■■■■■ has apparently left. College students should realize shopping can be done at home, no stores needed near campus. Worrying about shopping is so superficial. Fun thread for us oldsters who actually remember real hippies. UW Madison in the Viet Nam era, State St…

Exactly.

Considering Dov Charney’s outstanding list of Sexual Harrassment suites against him, the blatent sexism on every single one of his advertisements (You know, like these: [American Apparel Ads: the 50 Hottest in Company History](<a href=“C'est quoi un style américain ? - Stylecrave.com”>C'est quoi un style américain ? - Stylecrave.com) that are basically the absolutely most demeaning ADs I have ever seen consistantly used by a company) I don’t think so.

I don’t know any self-respecting feminist who would proclaim they just LOOVEEE American Apparel. [American Apparel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](<a href=“American Apparel - Wikipedia”>American Apparel - Wikipedia)

I might as well be playing hipster bingo. It’s one thing to not educate yourself on what stores spend their donation funds on which parties (Urban Outfitters & the Republicans) and thus be duped into buying into a brand that shows off it’s ‘liberalism’ as a hook, but it’s another to completely disregard sexual harassment in order to buy spandex in gold.

Never mind the fact that neither store is anything but a store for Hipsters, not hippies.

The difference being that Hipsters do it to look cool & engaged in the world (and often actually hurt the movement they stand for, like feminism), and hippies actually are engaged, and don’t give two s**ts whether or not they look cool doing it.

Simply put, I’m sure she’ll find friends for her vegan co-op that will smoke weed and drink blue pabst ribbon with her in tight jeans anywhere while they wax eloquent on the woes of society and pretend to like/have actually read Fight Club, and anything by Kurt Vonnegut.

Hippy versus Hippie versus Hipster reminds me of Trekkie versus Trekker

And if you’re looking for a college that’s out on the edge: [Buddhist Inspired Contemplative Education - Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado](http://naropa.edu/)

-@ Post 20. I do not qualify for need based financial aid. My dad works for Goldman and should get a bonus this year to pay for my entire four years. After some thought, I realized I could just buy my clothing online so I don’t need to be near a American Apparel. However a school near a yoga studio and a Whole Foods would be a nice bonus.

-I am interested in human rights law to help under-served populations.

-I meant Hippie (I posted this REALLY late as I came back from a pro-choice rally)

-Also, I may purchase my clothes, but I try to deform them as much as possible to make them “my own”.

-Just because I am a Neo-hippie, does NOT mean I should compromise my education. I am a driven and confident young woman determined to make an impact on this world. Therefore, would like to go to school ranked on the U.S News top 30. A LAC in the top 20 would be acceptable, but I would rather go to a school people actually have heard of.

A TARP bailout bank? :-)

Whole Foods isn’t really hippie. It’s too corporate and expensive. Now a food co-op where they grow their own food and everyone takes turns and so forth - now you’re talking.

Skater Girl - if you are serious about your new found lifestyle definitely consider Warren Wilson. Service Learning - mandatory. Study Abroad - strongly encouraged for all. Policitally active and socially active. The school farm provides organic food for the school. Vegan/Vegetarian very available. Work for part of tuition - mandatory.
This school is practically a commune.
Not in the top 20 but a good education. The graduates do some interesting stuff and the faculty comes from some great universities. Top students are challenged in many ways.

“Work for part of tuition - mandatory.”
I stopped reading after that.

I have also added University of Virginia (U.VA) to my list of schools. As someone who believes good quality education should be available for all, I think my ideals might be better served at a cheap public university.
