I took Chinese 2 and then skipped to Chinese 4 the next year. At the time I thought that that would count as the ‘three years’ that UCs suggest you take. Is taking three years of a language really that importnat? Becuase our shcool does not offer Chinese 5, I am thinking about going to a community college to take Elementary Mandarin, the only Chinese/Mandarin course offered. Does that help for the three years?
Also, I was wondering how bad a Withdrawal looked. I withdrew from a math class from the same community college and they had told me if i did’nt report the W, the colleges would have no way of finding out about it. THe problem is that now that I have to take a language class, I don’t know how bad a ‘W’ is. PLEASE HELP!

i recommend taking the chinese class at the community college. basically, the UC's want three years of actual time taking a foreign language. people who skip maybe great with foreign language, or they could be viewed as "taking the easy way out" by already knowing their native language.

is there some way that you can take chinese at another community college? that could solve the problem.

it is true that they would never find out about the withdrawal if you never send the transcript. but you would need to send it if it includes chinese. however, there's also a slightly riskier way, which is to report only your chinese grade and not your math withdrawal on the application, and have the UC find out about both when they receive your college transcript AFTER you've been accepted (don't know if you want to do this route though). but i don't think a withdrawal from a COLLEGE class would be that bad anyway.

thank you so much! Do you think it's too late if I took the class during fall afterschool? I don't think there is anymore space in the summer class...the problem is, I won't be a ble to complete it in time for applications.

I think it's OK just so long as you're taking it. They require 4 years of English, after all, and you generally don't take all 4 of them BEFORE applications.

yea, as long as you write down on your UC app that your foreign language class at the community college is In Progress. however, make sure you follow through and take it, cuz otherwise if you don't, they can revoke your admissions (assuming they accepted you) for lying about taking foreign language.
