HELP to improve chance of admission (LOW GPA)

I am dying to go to the University of Chicago. Really, for me no other university even comes close. I have pretty good stats, the only flaw is my GPA, which I know is a pretty big flaw.

STATS:

SAT: 2310 (2nd try; first time i got 2150)
SATII';s: IIc 800; Bio 800; USH 800; WH 780; Lit 770 (predicted)

AP's: 7 AP's by admission time, all 5's , one 4 in Chem,

IB Diploma Candidate as well.

**GPA: 3.5 UW. upward trend, bad fresh/soph years, but almost perfect junior year. My GPA 10-12 is 3.75

EC's:

President of political club, philosophy club, vice president of community service club, captain of varsity tennis team, captain of decathlon team. positions in international club as well. Lot of community service hours.

I've really tried hard to make up for my lackluster GPA. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

I am planning on starting the admission essays this summer.

Let me say something that will make you feel better.

I had fewer EC's
I had a lower GPA
I had lower test scores
I had 3 AP's in all of highschool- with NO 5's
I still got in.

Just WANT it. When you're writing your essays don't blow them off. Show them that you want to be part of the community (how very unique it is) that makes up Uchicago. Be specific and work hard- it's an opportunity beyond any other.

thanks

anyone else have any suggestions?

be yourself! don't worry about it too much. and look for schools that fit in some ways what you like about Chicago.

And be aware that "I really really really want to go" is not the best answer for "Why Chicago?" spend a lot of time thinking about why this place in particular is right for you.

Dannonwater was your experience fairly recent? This gives me hope.

Yea, got in EA for this fall.

I have to warn you tho- I spent FOREVER on the essays.

Congrats to you! And thanks for the optimism. :-)

I agree with Dannonwater. I had a lower gpa than you with similar test scores, and a strong high school curriculum. I think that my essays, recommendations, and interview made them look past my gpa.

Chicago does not require SAT II's but strong ones do give the impression that one managed to learn something in HS. I think they will help.

Do the best on the parts of your application that you have control of, try to visit and interview if you can.

One of your challenges is to come up with a list of schools that you also like - if you go poking around on this forum you will find many suggestions. When you have your list, you may find it useful to apply to a couple of the other schools first - sometimes something comes to you just after you hit the Submit button. Better that its for a college where the application itself is so important.
