Help to the international student

Hİ.İ am from turkey/mersin
i have started to search U.S.M.M.A for 6 months.
And i wanna come and study in that school. but i have a question:
(Candidates must be nominated to the Academy by a U.S. Representative or Senator.)İs it the same for the international candidates too?if yes.how can i find senator???
plzz help me.

You must be nominated by your government and there must be an agreement between your government, the US and the school. The school is intended to train US ship officers. No student from Turkey has ever attended. Students from other countries are enumerated here: http://www.usmmaaa.com/GRADUATIONSTATISTICS.htm.
What major do you wish to pursue? If you wish to attend a US maritime school, there are others that may accept foreign students, i.e Maine Maritime, SUNY Maritime, Cal Maritime, etc. Best wishes.

İ wish to pursue marine operations.and how can i set the agreement between U.S, Turkey and the merchant maritime academy ??

For USMMA:
http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/facts/foreignstudents.htm
Deadline: February 1

For SUNY Maritime:
http://www.sunymaritime.edu/enrollmentinfo/undergraduate/InternationalStudents.htm
http://www.sunymaritime.edu/Academics/Programs/
http://www.suny.edu/Student/faq/faq.cfm?groupid=3&faqname=International%20Student%20FAQs
http://www.suny.edu/student/forms.cfm

May I recommend that the SUNY Maritime program might be easier for you to enter and there are more options for you. It is the oldest maritime school in the US, and while it receives federal funds, it is technically a New York state school.

For both schools, you will be responsible for all expenses and you must have excellent English. You must also take the SAT or ACT for academic proficiency and the TOEFL for English proficiency. Good Luck!

you are talking about more options.what do you mean ?
no problem about expenses and in my first year in U.S.A
i will take SAT and TOEFL Courses.
what do you think about Great Lake Maritime ?can you compare all the maritime colleges.whats your bests and can make career well?
thank you

Please read the different links. USMMA is a federal academy and has specific majors as well as requirements. The state maritime colleges have some different majors and requirements. All will prepare you for US Coast Guard licensing.

I posted this on another thread here and don't know if you saw it. The link below details lots of info regarding foreign students to both USMMA and other US Maritime Schools. Weski's posted sites offer additional info as well.

...hope it helps.

Code of Federal Regulations
* Title 46 Shipping

Part 310....
Subpart C—Admission and Training of Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy
then scroll to 310.66 "Foreign students"

http://www.washingtonwatchdog.org/d...310.html#310.66

If you want more info on the other schools you'll need to scroll back to the top of the page on the link above.
Good luck

Just my 2 cents from a CGA perspective. I know the three intl. cadets in the 4/c class at CGA. They are all good kids, two from Lithuania and one from Tunisia. The kid from Tunisia is one of the top students in the class. The Lithuanians are great athletes and good students. All struggle a bit with their English but that is understandable. They are well-liked and not treated any different than other cadets. I would urge you to contact your government officials and see if your country has an agreement with ours to send students to service academies. Good luck.

i dont know who knows any information about our agreement. But i am searching now.Can i ask it to u.s.m.m.a ?but i know that my friend is now in u.s.a(preparing s.a.t)and he visited Great Lake Merchant Marine Academy.and the next year he is going to study in Great Lake.He is from Turkey too.So i think there will be no problem with U.S.M.M.A too.(for me)thank you for information Bossf51
prayerful mom, thank you for link.it helped me a lot.

I would recommend that you talk to your country's Department of Transportation or Maritime Affairs. For the Federal academies, you may need their approval - for the state academies, you may only need a student visa, plus the academic and financial requirements.

For a listing with links to the US and Canadian academy, please visit:
http://www.marad.dot.gov/acareerafloat/academies.htm

ha now i understand.U.S.M.M.A is a federal academy.
so what are the state academies in U.S.A?
and what are the federal academies iin U.S.A?
and the important question is:
What's the difference between federal and state academies(after graduation from state academies--can i find job and make career in u.s.a vessels or companies)
sorry for my ignorance.i dont know really what to do

Sez... I think the link that I posted above lists all the US Maritime schools (Cannot access on this computer)...if not do a Google search for "US Maritime Schools".........

Federal academies(maritime):US Coast Guard Academy; US Merchant Marine Academy; US Naval Academy; (US Military Academy; US Air Force Academy-non maritime).

The other maritime academies are state. The difference is the federal academies are funded and regulated by the federal government while the others are state-funded for the most part. The federal academies, other than the Coast Guard, require an appointment, usually by a congressman or senator.

You can get a job on a ship after graduating from a state academy. They all lead to a license. You can also get a commission to the services if you are an ROTC student.

The key for you is to find out if Turkey has an agreement with the US allowing its citizens to attend an academy. Since Turkey is part of NATO I can't see why not.

now i'm understanding everything. We are part of NATO.you re right about that.maybe noone want to study in U.S Federal academies by now.i will find out this.if i can find a job on a ship in U.S.no problem for me.i can study at a state academy.but what's ROTC ?

I have a daughter at USMMA and a son at Great Lakes Maritime. Different Schools and Different Personalities. Both Excellent for the student attending.

USMMA - Federal Maritime School - Unlimited Open Ocean License -- Lots of Sea Time (~ year) -- Lots of Work and Regimentation. Life Long Friendships.

Great Lakes -- Freshwater and SaltWater Unlimited License as well as a Business Degree. ROTC available. Small Classes -- personal attention. Life Long Friendships.

İ am happy for you :) you're a great mom!!
my mom will send me to SUNY Maritime.İs it the Best State Maritime College in U.S.A ?

My opinion for what it is worth ONLY.

They look and sound better on paper than they appear in person. My main objection was that every professor that we spoke with, complained numerous times during our visit about the lack of funding and how many of the projects that they were working with the students on could not be brought to fruition.

Before seeing SUNY he thought that would be a great school to attend because he would be close to his sister at USMMA. After seeing the school (facilities), talking with the professors, and seeing the attitude of student body and the way that they wore their uniforms he made a decision that it was not the right school for him.

My son and I looked at and considered SUNY, MASS MARITIME, TEXAS A&M Maritime and Great Lakes. He decided on Great Lakes and is very happy with his decision.

You might be happy with SUNY. Please simply understand that this was our experience and my opinion only.

But What about the prestige of the college ?Many people says that after graduation from SUNY you have job guarantee than other State maritime academies.İs it true? And the academy has many awards.its not important what they say.the important thing for me is find job easier than the other academy graduates.because of this.the academy is soo important..

Sezgikocak: Perhaps you should email the admissions offices directly. Job opportunities are excellent for maritime graduates; however, we do not know if it would apply to a foreign student. Please ask the schools directly.

i sent mail to the admissions offices.they said no information will send your e-mail.you have to visit school
