HELP! too many options-Future International student. MSE

Hello,

I'm form Spain and i'll be studying in the US during the next spring semester (hopefully). I have been given many options about where to study, and I have to choose my placement interests.
I am styudying Materials Engineering, so I'm looking for the best university in this area of interest, but, since I'm staying just for one term, I also want to enjoy the lifestyle, so good campus environment is also important!
I don't have to pay for the tuition because I will be enrolled on an exchange program, so the only "worries" about the money are the room and board.

So, here they go:

University of Urbana Champaign

University of Georgia (@ Atlanta)

illinois institute of technology (@ chicago)

colorado school of mines (@ golden)

olin college of engineering (@ needham, MA)

rensselaer polythecnic institute (@ troy, NY)

university of connecticut (@ Storrs)

I plan to choose the best three, so HELP ME pLEASE!!

I think UIUC is the best of these, isn't it? but i don't know if I will be accepted there, my academic advisor told me it's difficult.

Thanks in advance!

First, I think there is an error on your list. You say University of Georgia but put it in Atlanta. University of Georgia is in Athens, Georgia quite a distance from Atlanta and it has no materials engineering program. I assume therefore you meant Georgia Institute of Technology (Gtech) which is in Atlanta and has such program.

UIUC and Gtech would be your highest ranked colleges for engineering and materials. However, the other ones you list would also be fine. As far as “Campus life” not sure what you are looking for. UIUC is fine for college town atmosphere. Also, since it is a full program university it has an equal amount of women as men and for others you list that would only be true for Conneticutt as the rest will have a high proportion of males to females since they are principally engineering universities. If you are looking for large city life, Gtech and IIT put you right in large cities, and Colorado School of Mines is right by one. UIUC is far from the choice if you want large city life (it is in two small cities, Champaign and Urbana with about 100,000 total residents and then nothing but farms, forests and little towns 50 miles in any direction). If you are looking for fairly warm weather, Gtech is the choice where it will be in 50s (Fahrenheit) when you arrive in January while at UIUC it could be zero (again Fahrenheit) with a lot of snow on the ground. The others also have cold winters.

I’ll just go ahead and bump this thread, cause I’m also wondering about GaTech and UIUC (I’m doing a years exchange).

Which one would you guys recommend for international students (I’m from Sweden)? Where is it easiest to get to know new people and also other international students? Do you need a car to get around in Atlanta?
