HELP?? Transferring from Boston University!

Hiii
I just finished my freshman year at Boston University.
I am less than pleased--While I love Boston itself, I don't know about the school--It's just too big and too unpersonalized and "clique"y for my taste...I am also a premed student (as with almost every freshman in CAS) and because of that, I have done badly (GPA: 3.3).

I was an excellent student in HS, and not only gradewise, i was involved in EVERYTHING. I got into most of the schools I applied to, including Brown, Johns Hopkins, Wellesley, WashU, whatnot....But I chose to go to BU in the end because it was a free ride (i paid 2000 this year in all)

BU is a LOT LOT harder than its name...I feel like I'm trapped here as a mediocre student and extremely worried that I won't get into med school (just look at my gpa). I've never been able to receive a solid A these two semesters..and it's not from a lack of trying, chemistry just takes over my life (i have chem 5 days a week and tests every week in the four sections--lab, lecture, prelab, discussion).

I am REALLY looking into transferring to Emory soon because the longer I wait, the less they will look at my high school credentials. I know how competitive premed is at Emory and lately I have been questioning my career goals for the future (I don't think I am cut out for the sciences)--I may decide to change my plans completely and apply to the business school...

I know they have an excellent business school, but how competitive is it to get in? Should I just apply to the College of Arts and Sciences (or whatever it is called there) as an Econ major? (i'm an econ/premed now).

Do I even honestly have a chance?? Any thoughts will be appreciated, and thanks in advance =).

75% of CAS students who applied to Goizueta get in. (the data is from the chat@Emory session). Usually they have higher than 3.5 GPA

u need to be more specific on your college credentials so people can help you...how many units do you have? etc?; remember colleges place high emphasis on college work; high school is pretty much the base but the tip of the ice burg (aka college) is what counts ;)

He wants to transfer to Emory from BU, not to Goizueta from the College..

As for your chances - I'm not really sure, but since your high school record is strong, you probably have a good shot.

^ well, his college gpa is below the average, so im confused

3.3 is below average for BU? or for Emory transfers?

emory transfers; the average for emory is a 3.5 + i believe

OP got into Wellesley, so I'm thinking he's a she.

LOL YES i'm a SHE =)
I had a 4.3 GPA in high school --4.4 was the highest possible
-- I have a very very strong high school record, especially with leadership, volunteer work, internships.
My current GPAs sux ass and it'll prob get worse as I take two lab courses (one of them being Organic Chem)

I have 33 credits (units, whatever) now, 16 first sem 17 second semester. I'm debating whether to put in my transfer....While I know it'll be better in the long run, I'm having trouble getting over the fact that I would have to be a freshman all over again (in terms of getting acquainted with the place, ECs, making friends, etc....) SIGH

i just wish I applied to Emory as a senior.

what makes you want to transfer to emory now? well, i am an applicant for this semester, so i am in the same position as you, except that i know a bit about it since i did my transfer research before i applied. I could tell you that even though u have an excellent high school gpa, college is still the thing they look @ most; it makes sense. To an admissions officer, i think it might appear as perhaps in high school there was a grade inflation and perhaps thats why your gpa was so high...and now that your in the "real world college environment" the challenging requirements are a bit too much for you. But if you feel that emory is the school for you, then you should perhaps apply. But take in mind that your college work will be looked at more highly than high school... If you feel you cant transfer to emory, then perhaps you should look @ going to a JC, raise your gpa and transfer :) hope that helps

what the heck is a JC?
No, my grades suck because of premed. Without premed I could do 3.6+, I am positive. My first step is to get out of premed, but it's difficult because it's what I planned to do all along. But if i'm transferring, I'm def going to apply as a diff major, nonscience

OH.
No I am most definitely not going to a Junior College, thank you.
I hope that wasn't an insult.

Well it is too late to transfer for next fall, so you will have the opportunity to boost your grades before you apply to Emory next year.

I thought the deadline is June 1st

well, the deadline passed for financial aid, it was april

I will most likely apply for Spring 2007--My goal is to get my GPA 3.5 cumulative....

Sprkl325,
You also may want to consider transferring to Oxford College. My son transferred there last year from a well-regarded LAC in NE with a similar GPAas yours. He liked Oxford and did not even consider Emory College for his sophomore year as he wanted the advantages of a LAC in a different environment. Also, the requirements for transfer admission probably are a slightly lower than Emory College. Students in good academic standing go on to Emory College for their junior and senior years. However, because the class size is small (approximately 300 per class) there may be limited space for transfers. He just finished his sophomore year at Oxford and had a great experience. It is a lot of work but the atmosphere is friendly rather than competitive. His GPA went up signficantly as he was quite happy there. I would advise visiting as the location is isolated for some students. On the other hand, it is conducive for creating a tight community. Moreover, you are looking at spending only one year there before moving on to the main campus.

i feel ya....i know that BU has MASSIVE grade deflation...however, many ppl do not know that, b/c once upon a time, it was a fairly easy school, Emory on the other hand...has massive grade inflation

Yes that's what i hate about BU!!
the HUGEEEEE grade deflation that NO ONE takes into consideration. Colleges around Boston certainly know (Harvard, Tufts, Northeastern, etc) about it, but no one outside of MA recognizes that!
I don't want to be stuck with a 3.1 GPA that I KNOW (not think, KNOW) that I've worked harder for.

What is Oxford College? is that like the CGS of BU?!

bball87, what college do u go to?
