Can anybody help us find a reliable transportation company to take my son from the dorms to the airport Thursday night (6 pm). After two bad experiences with Nittany Express (not being picked up, etc) we need to try someone else. Bus service doesn't operate that late - and all I see are bad reviews online for the various taxi companies. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks.

Ask a friend with a car? The people I know who fly out of UP airport either get a ride from a friend or get a taxi.

My daughter gets a taxi if she can’t find a ride- it’s under $20. Just be sure to call ahead to make sure they have one available.

Our D got accepted for fall…We live way out western part of the US. Big worry for us thinking how she would get from pittsburg to state college:/

Nitnat: Look up Megabus or Fullington Express, Megabus is ridiculously cheap if you book far enough in advance.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, my son is a freshman and doesn’t know too many students with cars yet so that hasn’t panned out. I’m wanting him to go by taxi (sorry if I didn’t make myself clear) but I don’t know which taxi company to call. Again - we had a very bad experience with Nittany Express and he almost missed his flight last time. I’m looking for which taxi company you can rely on. I’ve been told we need to book ahead since they’ll be busy with spring break - just looking to see which of the taxi companies are most reliable. Again - thanks for all your advice!!

thank you duke26 for the info:)

How does one get to the dorms from the megabus? are there cabs waiting or is there bus service?

ljrfrm - Wish I could help you with the taxi. Even tho my son is a freshman, he has flown out of State College 5 times already. But he has always left early enough to catch a bus to the State College airport. He gets the bus right by the Engr building. Returning to school, he has taken taxis but I don’t know what company. He has also shared a van with some other students.

BUT - this week he’ll be heading out on a Saturday and there is no CATA bus service. So - thanks for the heads up! I will need to remind him to look for another option.

The CATA (Centre Area Transportation Authority) bus service provides service both to the University Park airport as well as to the Walmart on N. Atherton St. (which is where the Megabus picks up and discharges passengers in State College)

For service to Walmart - look for Route V - Vairo Blvd
For service to the University Park airport - Look for Route AP - Airport
(Note: Both of these routes stop on the PSU campus - in front of the Pattee library as well as other points.)

You can find more information and route schedules for CATA here:
[CATA | Centre Area Transportation Authority](http://www.catabus.com/)

Disclaimer: I’m just a parent - I’ve never used the CATA system so I do not know how reliable it is. I do know that my kid has used CATA to get to various places around State College.

Does the Megabus actually take students to the airports in Pittsburgh, Philly, DC (wherever)?

For Pittsburgh at least (I don’t know about Philly and DC), the Megabus does NOT service the Pittsburgh airport. You’d need to walk a few blocks from the Downtown Pittsburgh bus terminal (where the Megabus picks up and discharges) to the corner of Liberty Avenue and Wood Street which is where the PAT (Port Authority Transit - the Pittsburgh-area public transit system) bus 28X-Airport Flyer picks up. That PAT route goes directly to and from the Pittsburgh airport.

Here’s a link to the PAT website listing the 28X information:

Thanks QuietType - that’s what I thought. Think we’ll just stick to flying him out of State College!!!

^^^^^^I suspect flying in and out of the State College - UP airport would be a whole lot easier than bus to Pittsburgh and flying from there!!!

^^
Most definitely!

I’ve taken the Megabus into Philly (and would highly recommend it to anyone), and it drops you off at the Amtrak Station on 30th Street, so you could easily take a quick train/taxi to the airport from there.

I wish the bus service was more frequent - or at least later at night/weekends. That said, my son made a reservation through a taxi service that we found. I’ll post on our success. So far, he had no problem with getting ahold of them and making the reservation. I’ll post company name and our success tomorrow night after the fact to hopefully help others.

I wanted to provide some feedback to help students/parents who need taxis to the airport outside of the bus operating hours. My son ended up using Handy Delivery and it worked out great. He was able to make the reservation yesterday and they were right on time, waiting for him exactly where they said they’d be. It ended up costing just about the same as the van trip last time but without the worries and headaches. I would definitely recommend them and will use them again.
