Hi, all! I'm freaking out a little bit here, so any words of wisdom would be much appreciated!

I'm starting my 2nd year at my CC, and I'm applying to transfer for Fall 2010. I've been following IGETC, and on the pamphlet my school gives me, it says the UC Foreign Language requirement is fulfilled by taking "at least one language other than English course at [my CC] numbered 180 or above." I'm planning to take Spanish 180 in the Spring (this course is equivalent to 2 years of HS foreign language).

But when I go on assist, the Foreign Language requirement for UCB's (my goal) School of L&S says it requires "a course comparable to the third year of a foreign language in high school or the SECOND semester of a foreign language as taught at Berkeley." It says Spanish 185, which is the next course in the sequence, satisfies the requirement. Um, does this mean that I have to taking Spanish 180 won't fulfill the requirement? Do I have to take 185 before I can transfer? I read on another thread that certifying in IGETC automatically means that you've completed all the requirements to transfer, but I don't know for sure if that's true. Have any of you heard this? Is there anybody on here that has successfully transferred to a UC with only one intro Foreign Language course?

So sorry for the long post! I'm just a little anxious about this.

apologies if this doesn’t apply: but did you take foreign in language in HS? 'cause just showing transcripts should fulfill IGETC

well… if you r a spanish speaker and writer and have no problem with spanish then you can request a IGETC foreign language Test which allow you to fulfill the foreign language in IGETC… well, u dont really need to worry about the foreign language requirement for UCB, as long as you complete IGETC and get your major pre done. You will be FINE! I got into UCB, UCLA… my experience tell me ur major pre and GPA is the most important thing. good luck

Thanks guys! Bulenight, I’m not a Spanish speaker, so I probably wouldn’t be able to pass that test. Did you take two semesters of Foreign Language or just one? (By the way, congrats on getting into UCB and UCLA!) And Simplistical, I didn’t take 2 years in high school. So I definitely have to fulfill the requirement at my CC.

On Assist, is 185 listed as a GE requirement, or as the IGETC requirement?

Each UC has two sets of classes that satisfy the GE requirements. One is IGETC, and one only applies to the specific UC. I think 185 is the Berkeley-specific GE requirement, which is not necessary if you’re IGETC-certified.

Nick_scheu: You know what? When I went on assist, I looked at the GE/Breadth requirements. I just realized that at the top of the page, it says: “Note: completion of IGETC (certified by your community college) satisfies all of these requirements.” My CC only requires Spanish 180 to be certified. I knew something was wrong when I looked at my school’s schedule and saw that they don’t even offer Spanish 185!

Wow, what a relief! Honestly, I know I’m only a lurker, but I don’t know what I’d do with out this site! Thanks guys! :)

all u need to take is like spanish 1 and youre all good right?

Depends on the CCC. Some require two semesters, some require just one. Off the top of my head, PCC requires two 5-unit classes and Mt Sac requires one 4-unit class. It’s strange.

You could always spend 6 months with Rosetta Stone and test out of it, if you’re good at languages.

oo i c well i attend SMC santa monica college and i think one semesters worth of a language class is = to 2 yrs at a HS

Yep, looks like the first semester of the foreign language satisfies IGETC at SMC.
