I was accepted to UCSC but for my 1st semester my grades were not so good, but they don't know that yet.

My grades were:
Trig/Finite: B
AP Goverment and Economics: B
AP Literature: D
Yearbook: A
Photography: A
Physics: D
(Accumulated GPA ~ 3.0 weighted)

I've enrolled in night school to raise my lit grade but to do that I HAD to ask my teacher to make my grade an F due to budget cuts and space in night school.

But i do have a good reason. A month before the end of 1st semester, my grandmother became seriously ill. Over the next weeks she remained in the hospital and had her colon removed. During this time, my parents did not even come home as they remained by her side, and all household duties fell on me, from picking up my younger sister from school, dinner, and maintening the house. This took so much oof my time. I had not counted on that since I was already overstressed with upcoming Academic decathlon competition, yearbook deadlines, financial worries, and other private issues. Combined this brought my two toughest classes down to D's...and right around semester time.

Should I tell UCSC and write an appeal or just wait and let them find out later (as some have suggested) since I am sure my 2nd semester grades will be back to normal???

UCSC is my top choice and the only UC I was admitted to and I know they are the strictest on senior grades. What should I do??
