HELP! UF vs Penn State vs CU

Hi, I am a current senior in Florida and I have gotten admitted to the University of Florida, Pennsylvania State University at University Park, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. I am really trying to decide which university I want to attend this fall. I want to major in psychology while following the pre-med track to become a psychiatrist. Any suggestions on which of the three universities I should attend for my undergrad?

Unless money is not an issue I would go to your state school and save the difference in tuition for medical school. UCB and PSU are very expensive for OOS students and probably not worth the extra money if you plan to go on.

Thank you so much for your advice.

I was just thinking about the numbers. UF is a great bargain; you are probably looking at a difference of $100K over four years, more if you get any kind of financial aid at UF. (It is unlikely you’d get much in the way of financial aid at the other two schools.)

I am a dual enrollment student and when I graduate this year I will have my associates degree, so I will only be attending college for two years. I was offered a $55,000 scholarship over 4 years at CU boulder, but since it is divided into 4 years it will not cover all my costs. For penn state I have not received any scholarships yet. For UF I will have 100% bright futures which will cover all my tuiton. I am torn because a part of me wants to get out of Florida to experience a new state, but like you said based on the figures, UF seems to be the most ideal for me.

You are in a great position and with just two more years for your bachelor’s degree; I would hang in there in Florida. Having less debt when you get out of medical school will allow you more choices of work and where to live when finish med school. At least that’s what I’d tell my own kid. :)

It’s true, despite how much I want to leave Florida, I really do not want to acquire debt for my undergraduate studies. Thank you again for your advice.

Colorado is beautiful. I live in Wyoming right now, but I lived in Colorado Springs for seven years. It is a very different climate. It is great if you love hiking, mountains, skiing or snowboarding, but you need to be prepared for the altitude difference, dry climate, mountain lions in Boulder, and lots of snow. The good news is that the snow here is usually followed by beautiful weather which melts most of it very quickly. I can understand the desire to check out other states. I am about to get my AA in May, and will be transferring to PSU. I do not like the University of Wyoming at all. Besides that, I have other things to consider with my daughter’s health, and moving is necessary for me. If you like the program at University of Florida, it may be a better idea to wait until you get your Bachelor’s. If you are getting enough from CUB, and only need small loans, it may be a good option for you if you like their program better. I would do more research on what each of these Universities has to offer, and go from there. Good Luck!
