I'm deciding between UIUC business school with a likely major in finance
or Northwestern where i'll probably major in Econ. and the mmss program.

Can someone help convince of either one?
thanks

also, i'd receive in-state tuition at uiuc

Any reason why you are doing different majors at each school? Just pick the major you are more interested in. If it were the same program at each school, I would just tell you to do Northwestern, but since it is different programs, it is like apples and oranges.

well, I eventually want to go into finance. I’ve heard that the economics program is not that well regarded at UIUC while the business school is considered prestigious.
It’s pretty common for econ majors at NU to go into finance.

What i want to know is if it’s worth it to go to Northwestern paying full tuition over instate tuition at UIUC

The difference between UIUC and NU’s tuition is something like 20-25,000. This is a RIDICULOUS amount of money, even if your parents are rich. That’s enough to buy a house or a crazy nice car. Really, really think about whether ~$100,000 is worth it. In my opinion, there’s no way it is.

Unless NU gives you some money (they are private so they are usually more generous with scholarships than the big publics) then I would be hard pressed to say that NU is worth the extra money in a situation like this. The business school at UIUC is good. The school as a whole is fairly good, but the finance and accounting departments are exceptional (business administration, marketing, etc kind of drag them down as far as rankings are concerned) so you shouldn’t lose out on much, if any quality if finance is your ultimate goal.
