Hello,
I am a junior in the largest school in my state. My dream school is Uuniversity of Michigan, but I am worried about acceptance. Unfortunately, my SAT score from December was low (I only got a 1310), and I am hoping that I will improve with the school sponsored spring SAT in April. Not if my score doesn’t improve, I wanted to hear the public opinion on if they believe I will be accepted. By the end of junior year I will have taken 6 AP classes, and by graduation 10 total. I am in multiple clubs (Model UN, Teen Court, Link Crew, NHS). I was recently elected President of National Honor Society for the 18/19 school year. Also, I am on varisty tennis for my school. I also work at my school for the technical crew (behind the scenes for musicals and plays). I have never received a grade under an A, and my weighted GPA is 4.065 (my school is weird when it comes to weighting). I understand UMich reweights grades; however, like I said I have only received At’s in my high school career. I know I will be taking the SAT again, but with my old score from December along with extracurricular do I have a chance of getting in?
Thank you
UPDATE: I am also 2 out of 775 in my class ( I was 1 last year:/ )
Take the Act also and see how you do. Luckily they do review holistically. You are in theory compared to the kids at your school. What is the average Sat score? I would try to be a few points above that score.
Look at Section C7 of Michigan’s Common Data Set, here, http://obp.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/pubdata/cds/cds_2016-2017_umaa.pdf, which identifies the admissions factors that U of M considers, and the relative weights assigned to those factors by U of M.
If you will be an OOS applicant, you probably want to bring up your SAT score (and I second the suggestion that you take the ACT, as most students do better on one or the other test). The standardized test scores of your likely competition in the applicant pool will be quite good.
Your GPA and course rigors are both good for UMich where they consider those as Most important. You do need to bring up your test score. What is your intended major and are you from OOS. Have you practised the test and reached a plateau practice score? You should aim at 1450+ if you are from OOS. The next thing is to learn more about UMich and see how it fits you well. You need to reflect that in your application. There are the main factors.
I personally always found ACT easier than SAT, its personal preference try both. And you’re gpa is really strong, great essays and a passion/story through your essays can help your cause too.
I am from the state of Michigan. Will this help?
My intended major is chemical engineering and I live in the state of Michigan
Bring your SAT to around a mid-1400 and you have a decent chance of getting accepted. Don’t get too hard on yourself, though. You might just suck at taking standardized testing - I did (and got diagnosed with ADD in part because I sucked so bad at not doodling on standardized tests).
I got in the first round of applications with a 1330, so not to kill your motivation, as you should continue to prep for the SAT every day, but it’s definitely possible you’ll get in. Also however, that was the highest score anyone has ever gotten at my high school, so that’s a factor. Had a 4.0 UW GPA as well and some very strong extracurrics. The most important part you can do besides study for the SAT is write your essays. Some of the prompts stay the same (why Michigan) so I’d advise you to start them this summer.
So you are applying to CoE from Michigan. Try to bring up your test scores to 1400+ and get your Math section score to 750+. Then you will be around or above the average of in state applicants.
Your class rank is a really good sign
