Help! UMich vs UCLA for Electrical Enginnering (International Student)

Hey everyone! This college application process has definitely been gruelling. Now, trying to move on from my rejections and trying to decide between my acceptances
I got accepted to UMich, UCLA, GTech, and CMU for ECE. However, I am not too sure I will work as an engineer in the future; maybe do an MBA, work in the banking sector, or go for a start-up.
I am trying to decide bw UMich and UCLA but very confused bw them!!
So please help me decide by telling me the pros and cons of both colleges.
I’d really appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you very much!

umich is more well-rounded than ucla, with pretty much all fields ranked highly. i would recommend umich but ucla has better weather lol. umich ross and engineering is amazing though.

Hey there, I’m actually in the same boat of deciding between UCLA and UMich for engineering/business. Currently, I’m leaning towards UMich quite a bit more than UCLA. As Eeeee127 has said, UCLA definitely has better weather than Michigan for winter. The thing I’d consider about each school is the opportunities available at each. Engineering-wise, both schools are top-tier and you can’t go wrong with either. Since you are looking at business related ventures, you cant go wrong with Ross at UMich and you can potentially apply to the BBA program though regular decision. If you think internships are important, then UCLA has a closer proximity to silicon Valley, but Michigan also has a wide number of companies that would offer internships. Either college is a good choice , so just follow your gut about what you want to do!

Based on your user name, maybe UCLA. I live near UM with 2 kids going there. So I love UM obviously. But we don’t have much sunshine here. Winter is COLD. I am telling both kids to get out of Michigan after graduation. One is going to Washington DC with a job offer.
If you want to work in start up maybe UCLA. Ross regular admission is no longer an option. Just to offer some information.

Hi! Glad to find someone in a similar situation. Which college do you think consulting firms prefer? Also, as I’m international, world ranking is important to me and UCLA is ranked higher for some reason even though UMich has such amazing programs?

Oh I live in Russia so I’m quite used to the cold. Any other pros and cons?

Michigan is better for Engineering over most disciplines and UCLA doesn’t have a business major.

Also - if you may be interested in an Engineering/Business dual degree at Michigan, this link will give you much more information

Sunshine, there are several “world rankings”. The two most popular ones are split over Michigan and UCLA. Times ranks UCLA 7 spots higher than Michigan, while QS ranks Michigan 8 spots higher than UCLA. 7 or 8 spots out of thousands of universities around the world is completely insignificant. Besides, those rankings are not necessarily that accurate to begin with. Where academics and reputation are concerned, CMU, Michigan and UCLA are equal. Instead of worrying about those factors, go for fit…bot academic and non-academic. Explore all three schools and the programs they offer.

I also thought UMich was better for eng but got thoroughly confused when QS ranked UCLA 5th for electrical eng!! And thank you for the link.

Thank you for your response. Fit-wise I’m really okay with both and don’t have the option of visiting…

Pl help me
Umich lsa honors vs ucla engg… undeclared and choice major is cs… pl let me know which one sd i choose

I want to major in CS and minor in business in Umich… is it possible.
Can i hav a joint or dual degree with ross school of business with Cs ans major

Pl help

Michigan allows more flexibility than UCLA. Double majoring in CS and Business at Michigan is obviously possible, but unless you come in with a lot of AP credits, completing the dual degree from Ross and LSA will take more than 4 years. Perhaps 9 semesters instead of the usual 8.

AP
Calculus BC 5/5
Physics C Mechanics 5/5
Physics C Electricity and Magnetism 5/5
Computer Science A 4/5

How much this will help in CS major with business minor

you can major in computer science through lsa at michigan and still apply to ross regular admission they just acceptt less people and trasnfer to the engineering school if you really want. also umich has the business minor where you can take business classes

Agreed with sunshine1718. Please start your own thread.

I know a friend’s son is pursuing CS and business double major. He plans to graduate in 5 years. Michigan CS is extremely hard (that’s why they get paid such a high salary), I don’t think you can load up the courses to graduate in 4 years. Too much work. Another friend’s son had to quit Ross to finish his CS in 4 years. My son is only doing a CS minor with business BBA. He will graduate in 4 years.

If you want to go into business later U of Michigan is a better choice. According to Newly Released World’s Largest University Subject Rankings: 2017 Edition CWUR Michigan is number 3 in the world based on top-10 placement in a particular subject
