Help! Unanticipated alumni interview!

Ok, so my guidance counselor just told me that there will be a Yale alum coming to our school to interview those that applied to Yale.

The thing is, I've already interviewed with an alum in my area, and the interview went swimmingly. I'm not sure what the personality will be of this interviewer, but it's forecasted to be only 30 minutes. The guy apparently has to go somewhere after the interview.

I feel utterly unprepared, and I'm just not sure what to expect because the alumni that interviewed me a while ago was kind of unorthodox. He talked to me for 2 hours straight, not too much stuff about Yale specifically. Thus, this guy will probably ask me lots of questions.

Any tips? What should I mention? I'm freaking out! ;-/

The person coming to your school may be covering the students who have not had an interview yet. I'd have your counselor ask the alum if he wants to talk to people who have already had an alumni interview. I don't think the admissions office wants multiple interview reports from alums.

Other opinions? I need help!

go! and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about yale. don't pass up an opportunity to make a good impression! relax, be yourself, ask questions, talk about about yourself and your goals, and enjoy it! don't assume it won't be a good experience! my son went to his interview for dartmouth--and two people were there! he wasn't prepared for that either, but he had a great time and met two people that had a lot to share. go. talk. learn.

Thanks Wbow, that is reassuring. Whenever I ask questions though, I feel like I'm too talkative. LOL

Phew...the interview went well, although it wasn't nearly as long as the first one. I hope two positive reports will be more impressive than one to the admissions office. :-/

I'm so jealous! I didnt even get one interview! But i'm glad they went well for you :)

hi coquettish, sorry to hijack the thread but i didn't think this was worth its own separate thread. i also am receiving an unanticipated alumni interview. just got contacted by an interviewer today (saturday) for a meeting on monday at five. is this too late for an ea applicant (he knows i'm ea), considering that decisions are coming out thursday? also, if i get out of school at 3:30, would it be acceptable to wear my school uniform? thank for any help.

Hey Heartrules,

Apparently Yale is still trying to make decisions for those on the borderline. Just go on Monday, be pleasant, and hope for a positive report. With everything done electronically, it will get there on time. Good luck :-D

heatrules: I would say that your uniform would be completely appropriate (considering the situation).

Coquettish, do you think that i am getting interviewed because i am on the "borderline"? if so, that's great! i didnt think i really had a chance. bad news is, its almost 1 and i cant fall asleep; its a sunday tradition for me to never be able to go to sleep on time. its the only day that sleep seems to elude me. i just found http://www.yale.edu/asc/guidelines/interview.html, and now i feel like a crook for stealing all these secret interviewer tips. well, i need to get to bed now, and dream about how well my interview is going to go; positive reinforcement is the key! get to sleep everybody! you'll wish you did when you are sitting through an excruciating double period calc tomorrow.

I'm discouraged by the fact that I didn't get any interviews and Yale never called up any of the people who gave me recs or anything. Hah.

Good lord...I wish I had that before I went into my interviews...I'll keep that in mind for future sessions. Thanks! ;-D

wow, what a bizarre experience i just had. i walk into the medical office (i have a slight phobia of hospitals and the like) of my interviewer, open the door...and out comes my friend's father who has known me for almost fifteen years! i went to preschool with this kid! i had NO clue that he even went to yale; this kid is going to hear it tomorrow after not telling me his dad went there, let alone did interviews. we spent most the time catching up (his family moved out of my neighborhood a couple of years ago) and about five minutes on college. still, it went well. i still can't believe this.

WOW, you are so freaking lucky!!!!! That must have been a thrill ;-D Did you apply to Yale EASC? If so, what was their verdict on you?
